On paper, they make up the most formidable Libertarian ticket ever. But they still need to make the leap to seriousness.
Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson seized the Libertarian nomination for president at the partys national convention this weekend and escaped a hotly contested convention with his hand-picked running mate, former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld.
The pair form a political team of two former Republican governors that Johnson declared to be the most formidable third-party ticket in the modern era, one that he promised would thrust Libertarians from the fringe of American politics to major party status in a period of widespread mistrust of both the Republican and Democratic parties.
With Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton registering as two of the least liked and most mistrusted politicians in the country, many Libertarians see an opening and a desire for an alternative. And Johnson is the only other candidate likely to appear on the ballot in every state. Raising more money is supposed to be the big advantage of selecting Weld, who served as a fundraiser for Mitt Romney. He really likes fundraising and hes connected, Johnson said. And I really hate fundraising and Im not connected.
Their goal, in particular, is to loosen the wallets of the many disaffected and libertarian-leaning Republicans turned off by Trumps bombastic rhetoric and shifting policy stands by offering them an alternative of two former Republican governors.

Weld is pro-lifer repellent, including libertarian pro-lifers and pro-lifers who are leery of Trump.
Weld does not have a libertarian aura, his Democrat opponent in the ‘80s, John Silber, was actually more conservative on most issues, including government regulation.
Johnson himself wasn’t much of a draw last time. Throwing in a Massachusetts white show Republican who couldn’t even get voted to an Ambassadorship after the folks he offended as governor tels us about him.
They’ll draw as much from HRC as from Trump. They might evendraw some people willing to vote for the Republican underticket. Mostly a cipher, and a vanity play.
Yes they will siphon votes.
It won’t be enough to matter.
It’s financed by the Kochs.
Someone should post the picture of the New Libertarian candidate on stage with just his thong on....really classy, and you want that to lead our country?????
Yeah, unless Mitt wants to make a go of it.
I don’t think Cruz would, he still has a political future.
Could be Rubio though, especially if Trump U is anything to worry about. This week will tell the tale.
This guy will hurt hillary a lot more than us.
The press is trying desperately to make Trump as disliked as Hillary.
You were reading my mind, the commies.
I believe a dead cat running would hurt Hillary....
The liberal, socialist media has no earthly idea how to handle Trump...They are scared to death and have clue whatsoever....
Great minds and all that!
Why hold back. There are no more democrats. They are all now socialists and commies so why not tell it like it is?
and... you are probably right.
I am wondering how many Sanders people will go vote for Dr. Jill Stein if she is the Green Party candidate and Hillary the Dem. A number of registered Greens in various states temporarily left to register as Dem. to vote for Bernie. I have listed platform and issues links for Libertarian and Green Parties. The two platform listings for GP show a complete write out of their 2000 platform, and a summary, clickable contents page for 2014. I have not compared the two.

Hey, Chihuahuas can do a number on your ankles! :0)
The article never mentioned Bernie Sanders, which makes me believe it is a biased, one-dimensional piece. When Bernie Sanders fails to win the nomination, where will his supporter go? Of course, they will warm up to Trump, as I believe some have already done. The Libertarians are one step towards anarchy as is, the Bernies. Maybe Trump will take a good slice out of them and the rest will go for Gary Johnson. At least they will not give der Hildebeast the votes she is counting on to win.
There are several efforts trying to exploit the Beast’s Crookedness and the extraordinary Trump phenomenon. There is one I know about as another vote getting black hole. It is a national write in campaign. Go here to check out my friend’s TV Show:
Can you sip the ocean dry with a straw?
No, because the libertarians have never beaten 3% in any national presidential race.
And too many liberal libertarians would vote Democrat if Sanders was on the ticket or Hillary if not.
