Delegates to the Republican National Convention will gather in less than two months and are expected by most to nominate businessman Donald Trump for president. But it's not quite so simple or certain Trump will still have one last sales job ahead of him, persuading the delegates to choose him at the convention before he can claim the nomination.
This is because each and every delegate has complete freedom to vote their conscience at the convention, including who the party's nominee should be. This may come as a surprise to many, particularly those who are reading about Trump's recent win in the Washington state primary and how close he is to "clinching" the Republican nomination.

If I am Trump the first thing I do once elected is go after Haughland until he’s soot on a boot.
Hey Moe, time to slap the dog outta Curly.
Uh Huh. CNBC can’t stand it!
Well here’s a newsflash! Trump is going to win even MORE primaries between now and the convention.
The #NeverTrump troublemakers won’t know what hit them because the onslaught will be great, terrible and effective.
Trump doesn’t hit first.
He hits last and leaves his opponents DOWN!
You would think the Trump-haters would have learned by now.

Not sure what to believe as far as the rules go.
“This is because each and every delegate has complete freedom to vote their conscience at the convention, including who the party’s nominee should be.”
This Curly guy is still doing the blah blah blah.
I was dubious about the above, but it is in fact true.
I doubt there will be enough - if any- delegates that would break from the pledged delegate vote, but Curly is correct. They sure could.
It would turn in to chaos, probably still a Trump win on latter ballots.
That’d be amazing. It’d be hilarious if they could pull it off.
But, nothing like that is going to happen.
Little Curly from ND is a clown.
No problem. We’ll keep a list of who needs to be hanged.
This is for the consumption of Leftist retards, but I repeat myself.
This is the hope where there is none piece to give dumb dumb Dems something other than Hillary to talk themselves out of.
Don't bet on it. Suppose 5 of the delegates were killed in an auto accident. The only sure thing is Trump continues with every State left and make sure that the pledged count is over 1237. When he reaches 1400 I will feel secure. Trump for President and hope he continues for delegates.
These Trump deniers are pathetic.
The state sovereignty-ignoring Progressive Movement, evidenced by the ill-conceived 17th Amendment, is evidently regretting its backfiring plan to unconstitutionally centralize goverment power by means of mob rule.
Curly has a Hellary crush, sounds like.
He needs to let it go.
I agree that I want Trump to go to the convention with an overwhelming amount of delegates so they can't play any games.
Totally incorrect. There is no federal law binding delegates to vote a particular way and state laws are unenforceable at a national political party’s convention. The binding of delegates happens through mutual agreement between state parties and the national party.
The delegates to the national convention can do whatever they want. It’s their convention. They vote on a new set of rules to govern the convention. If they choose to disregard the mutual agreement for binding delegates, they are free to do so, period. The courts have ruled repeatedly that political parties have a constitutional right to freedom of association and can write and enforce their own rules. States cannot interfere in that process.
Nope. The delegates are not bound by any law.
NOW HERE THIS!!!!
I think that I can speak for the majority of people here, and probably for just about every Trump supporter when I say that the people down-ballot, the people in and running for the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES and for the US SENATE will NOT be getting our votes without Trump on the top of the ticket. They will be OUT OF WORK and whatever is left of the GOP in Congress will no longer even be a viable opposition party...they will be DECIMATED in November.
So I guess the GOPe is welcome to try to STEAL THE NOMINATION from Trump, but if they do, there will be a lot more people going down the tubes besides, Trump.
They need to give the CONSEQUENCES of such a stunt some SERIOUS THOUGHT before trying anything - we simply WILL NOT pull the lever for ANY REPUBLICAN if the nomination is now stolen from Trump.
Not gonna happen because people are seeing that Trump is a winning hand.
The delegates can vote however they want. (They won’t, but they can.) They can be subject to punishment under state law for not voting as directed by state law, but that’s after the fact - after the vote has taken place.
State laws cannot be enforced at a national political party’s convention and there is no federal law governing how delegates must vote. The courts have ruled repeatedly in favor of political parties’ right to govern themselves. They have freedom association.
