In his coquettish refusal to accept the Donald, Paul Ryan says he cannot betray the conservative principles of the party of Abraham Lincoln, high among which is a devotion to free trade.
But when did free trade become dogma in the party of Lincoln?
As early as 1832, young Abe declared, My politics are short and sweet, like the old womans dance. I am in favor of a national bank and a high protective tariff. These are my sentiments and political principles.
Campaigning in 1844, Lincoln declared, Give us a protective tariff, and we will have the greatest nation on earth.

The take-home message is that the only core principles the GOP establishment holds to is outsourcing and cheap labor. Everything else is negotiable, at least when one of their own gets the nomination.
CANTORIZE THIS WEASEL. WISCONSIN!
Lyin’ Ryan will continue to work against the citizens and for the Cheap Labor Express until he is removed from office.
Ryan has built a career on betraying the conservative principles of the party of Abraham Lincoln.
What’s nest?
Will politicians claim the Founders were devoted to sexual freedom for cross-dressers and pedophiles as justification for their support of sexual perverts?
This marks the first time I’ve seen a Speaker of the House described as ‘coquetish’. Paul RINO does seem to be playing hard to get, and at his own peril. Watch it, boy, the Trumpers plan to Cantor you, big time. If you don’t
‘get your mind right’, you may be getting schlonged.
RINO RYAN is nothing but Barky’s butt kisser, that’s why he was put in there to replace the ‘drunken one’...
We don’t need Ryan for anything, and I hope Trump replaces him as speaker at the Convention, he’s another Hillary on the opposite side...
Ryan and the rest of the GOP establishment are intellectually and morally bankrupt. Voters have finally woken up to the fact that they stand for nothing except feeding their donors' appetite for cheap labor with outsourcing and liberal immigration policies.
Well, he does seem a little light in the loafers.
Reagan used import taxes very effectively
Lyin’ Ryan deserves a schlonging that only a proctologist could envy.
I'd say thank you, Obama, but like always, it was simply handed to him by Romney rather than actually having to work.
In fairness in the 1830s and 1840s Lincoln was a Whig and there policies favored, for example, lots of government spending on canals and other infrastructure plus tariffs and strong currency. The whig party wasn’t particularly conservative in the sense of “small government” and using their platform from almost 200 years ago isn’t a good analog to today’s GOP.
The Whore of Planned Parenthood, the Whore of the Cheap Labor Express, the Whore of Obama’s Amnesty, is so very, very concerned about his virtue!
Investing in infrastructure is a legitimate function of the Federal Government. If minarchist purists had their way, we'd still be driving on dirt county roads rather than using the interstate, and transporting everything on river barges rather than railways.
I wish Nehlen the best, but never underestimate the power of incumbency, the RNC political machines, and GOP Super-PACS. If conservative states like AZ and SC can’t get rid of McCain and Graham in the primaries, I won’t hold my breath for Ryan’s Congressional district in Wisconsin to primary him out either.
I was not familiar with the word “minarchist” so I learned something. My point is that the whig platform of of the 1840s is not similar in just about any way to the GOP platform of 2016. The GOP, for instance, isn’t advocating a huge investment in public works today like the whigs of that time were. Cherry picking the issue of tariffs from the Whig platform as a comparison to today’s GOP is not really that honest or relevant. That’s all.
Of course, the issue is moot if Ryan loses his congressional seat. Any word on how that's been polling?
This from the guy and the uniparty that is going to bailout P.uerto R.ico in the middle of the night right before they go on the paid vacation!
FU P.R.! Yeah both of you:-)
What I was talking about was at the Convention, I believe Trump has the power to pick who he wants as speaker there...
Maybe Marx and Engels would be more appropriate.
