Cash worth 1.4bn yen ($13m; £8.8m) has been taken from cash machines in Japan using credit cards created with data stolen from a South African bank. The money was withdrawn in less than three hours from 1,400 convenience store cash machines across Japan, the Kyodo news agency reports. The withdrawals targeted 7-Eleven cash machines, which unlike most in Japan accept foreign cards. South Africa's Standard Bank estimated its total losses at $19.25m.

One of the few REALLY inconvenient things about Japan is getting and using foreign funds —strangely, it’s not easy like in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.
You know those little forEx kiosks in US airports? TOTAL RIP-OFF, much worse than the overseas kiosks. You’d end up spending something crazy, like over 6% just to exchange, they preyed on stupid people.
The convenience store ATMs posed MINIMAL fees and they’re all over the place.
THIS SUCKS..!
My prediction is they’ll just shut this all down.

Electronic debit and credit cards are more than just convienient, they are essential to multi-national economies .
