Greenfield police have released dramatic footage of officers using a technique to stop a fleeing stolen SUV and causing it to crash.
The chase reached speeds of up to 90 mph and took place shortly before 3 a.m. May 6 when an officer tried to pull over a vehicle stolen from a car dealership, according a Saturday post on the department's Facebook page.
Greenfield police explained the use of the "pursuit intervention technique," which involved an officer's squad car hitting the fleeing vehicle and causing it to crash into a pole near S. 27th St. and W. Lincoln Ave.

Stupid move to use the pit maneuver in a high speed urban chase. Luckily the light pole stopped the vehicle from crossing over the other traffic lane and ending up in someone’s living room.
I see that used here in California all the time. Locally they call it the “Pit maneuver”.
At least the dealership will get the pieces of their car back.
Thankfully no innocent people were killed.
These thugs will probably get juvenile status and be out committing more crimes within a few weeks.
The PIT maneuver, or precision immobilization technique, is a pursuit tactic by which a pursuing car can force a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control and stop.
Milwaukee had a well publicized no purduit policy. Thugs stealing hundreds of cars month. Dozens killed last yeardue to thugs causing wrecks.
Gotta think the lawyers are salivating over the pit maneuver and the deep pockets of the local municipalities responsible for using this maneuver, who will be sued for damages, deaths and injuries, and the officers’ jail sentences. Looks like an employment boom for the lawyers all the way.
A lucky ending to a reckless and poorly executed police tactic. As described on the Greenfield Police Department’s Facebook page, one of the suspects in the car was wearing a GPS ankle bracelet. There is no excuse to have endangered public safety by pushing a fleeing vehicle uncontrolled into innocent oncoming traffic on a busy thoroughfare. They should have backed off and organized a coordinated road block once the vehicle slowed down. If I lived in that city, I would be protesting in front of City Hall to have the incompetent leadership of that department fired.
Poor conditions to do a PIT, BUT, that said, the way the perp was blowing through signals, 50-50 if the PIT gets someone injured, or if the perp takes out a family driving through an intersection.
All of it said, I think the right decision was made. But I hear where you’re coming from, under most conditions, what the officer did would be stupid.
Last month, there was a rainy chase through the Hollywood hills lasting over an hour.
Who the hell would want to sue some poor thug. He ain’t got no money anyway. Suing the municipalities, now that’s a different story.
I would prefer the police just fire a missile at them so they never do it again. Make sure they’re dead. These animals will never be of benefit to society.
