Harvest should be the time for celebrations, weddings and full bellies in southern Malawi. But Christopher Witimani, Lilian Matafle and their seven children and four grandchildren had nothing to celebrate last week as they picked their meagre maize crop.
Last years drought, followed by erratic rains, hit the village of Nkhotakota hard. But this year the rains never came and, for a second year running, the family grain store is empty. If they manage their savings carefully and eat just one small meal a day, they may just have enough food for two more months.
By August, said Irish charity Concern Worldwide, they and tens of thousands of other small farmers in southern Malawi will have completely run out of food, with no prospect of another harvest for at least seven months. With nothing to sell and no chance of earning money, Witimani, Matafle and family will starve.
I am worried the children will starve to death. I dont know what to do, said Matafle.
We need food. We are in a desperate situation, her husband added.
Countries are just waking up to the most serious global food crisis of the last 25 years. Caused by the strongest El Niño weather event since 1982, droughts and heatwaves have ravaged much of India, Latin America and parts of south-east Asia. the last of the large-scale famines affecting many millions, donor countries have been slow to pledge funds or support. More than $650m and 7.9m tonnes of food are needed immediately, says the UN. By Christmas, the situation will have become severe.

Its an embarrassment, but the things done by China in Africa are far smarter, more effective, and are built to give China an advantage.
And then we send liberal college women with no skills to go sing songs with children.
Pretty much. So much aid has flooded into Africa that some countries now have higher populations than the carrying capacity of their agriculture, thanks to improvements in vaccines and education. All it takes is one hiccup in the food production system and suddenly all those extra people don’t have enough to eat.
Bingo!
If the UN bigots would allow ENERGY DEVELOPMENT in the third world, agricultural development and self-sufficiency would follow.
But, the U.S. and U.N. loath the idea of third world population growth and cultural development, least they compete to retain the benefits of their own natural resources.
I had a friend from college who went off in the Peace Corps to I think the Central African Republic.
The Village had no water system really for bathing so was common for Village People to go to the local Watering Hole too bathe, the men at a different time than the women.
as she walked there the women the men would call out to each other, openly alerting one another to the fact that she was soon going to be nude at the river. Then as she bathed they would openly masturbate.
these were the people she was helping. they fully understood that she would be seeing them, looking into their faces in hours, and they were perfectly fine with that.
I must allow that actually she was very pretty.
That was my question. Is this the same area that murdered successful white farmers, confiscated their farms and put a learn as you go plan in place? Not much sympathy except for innocent children . . . Who will grow up with same mentality. Stop force feeding that culture civilization and in 3 generations they will be back living in pre civilization conditions. Dirty, ignorant and victims no more.
These cultures are whacko. Until the people become less moronic they are doomed.
1) Stockpile food for the lean times;
2) Move.
And for the millionth time, the appeal goes forth to the world to bail these ignorant primitives out so they can continue to breed and produce yet another generation of ignorant primitives.
Sorry, but my boo-hoo well done run dry.
Sam Kinison has the answer. I actually got to see him live once.

How China gives aid. And can anyone imagine us building a hydroelectric dam there and insisting an American company get the contract?
“As many Chinese analysts observe, the Foreign Ministry in recent years has been fighting fiercely for the authority to manage Chinas foreign aid projects, which are currently under the purview of the Ministry of Commerce.
The intention of Chinas aid to Africa is benign but not altruistic. China does not seek to use aid to influence the domestic politics of African countries or dictate policies. Instead, it truly hopes to help Africa achieve better development while avoiding meddling with the internal affairs of African countries through conditional aid. But on the other hand, China is not helping Africa in exchange for nothing. Chinese projects create access to Africas natural resources and local markets, business opportunities for Chinese companies and employment for Chinese labors. When Chinese officials emphasize that China also provides aid to countries that are not rich in natural resources to defuse international criticisms, they often forget to mention that China may have its eyes on other things which these countries can deliver, such as their support of Beijings one China policy, of Chinas agenda at multilateral forums, and of China as a responsible stakeholder. In this sense, Chinas comprehensive, multi-dimensional agenda of its aid to Africa defies any simplistic categorization. “
They won’t adopt even the most innocuous technology. My daughter spent seven months at an orphanage and they cooked in a hut: a two by four foot adobe hut with a roof without a chimney. The women who cook die from the smoke inhalation, but they refuse to change. I suggested a rocket stove to produce a clean fire and reduce wood consumption, but the idea was ridiculed, even though the stoves were produced relatively locally.
The culture is the problem. Tribalism and stupidity are a cruel mix; however, it is the perfect mix for leftist dictators. People would rather spend time waiting on their government rice than building any sort of infrastructure. Production sources are not viewed as means of support; they are viewed as targets.
I’ve come to something close to that conclusion myself.
They are giving them fish, and not teaching them how to.
This goes beyond food too.
When you think about it, who runs those aid efforts? Isn’t it the global Leftists for the most part?
What does those folks know about an economic system? N O T H I N G !
They all think government handouts is tantamount to some tree that money grows on. They never quite grasp that there needs to be an economy. Without one, there wouldn’t be handouts from the first world nations.
What we should see happening is the introduction of entry level, intermediate, and advanced jobs over there. That’s the only way Africa will climb out of the mess.
Handouts, or simply growing a subsistence level of crops will never be sufficient to lead Africa into an average type existence.
If more attention was paid to all tier jobs, the place would improve overnight.
Grammar police... < emergency > LOL
So much for getting rid if all those white foreign farmers in South Africa. Eh? Sub South Africa is fully capable of feeding their people. Its the people themselves that have caused their own disaster.
^^^^^ This
Sally doesn’t appear to have missed too many meals...
If she’s giving of herself to convince us to give, good for her. If she’s demanding that it be taken from us, no good at all.
This can only mean one thing. That all the top recording artists of the world will come together in their limousines, their private jets and their entourages and collaborate on a sappy pop song that will win all sorts of Grammys and make everybody involved feel good about themselves.
So much for getting rid if all those white foreign farmers in South Africa. Eh? Sub South Africa is fully capable of feeding their people. Its the people themselves that have caused their own disaster.
It’s the same here only we call it “ghetto mentality”.
Make a man fish instead of shop with EBT and you're a fascist bully and probably a racist.
it could be worse..... venezuela
The average IQ in Malawi is 69. Could that contribute to the problem?
