With its last-minute decision to formally endorse Donald Trump, the National Rifle Association put itself out in front of the fight for Republican party unity.
Just a day later, its already taking flak.
Chris Cox, the NRAs top strategist, was met with raucous applause when he announced to the estimated 80,000 people gathered here for the groups annual leadership forum on Friday that the nations biggest and most influential gun-rights organization was officially backing the presumptive Republican nominee. To endorse so early in the process is virtually unprecedented for the group; they didnt get behind Mitt Romney in 2012 and Sen. John McCain in 2008 until October.
If your preferred candidate dropped out of the race, its time to get over it, Cox said.
But not everyone is there yet.

Hmmmm. Gun show in Reno at the Convention Center this weekend. May or may not go this afternoon when prices drop so they don’t have to haul all their stuff home. Of course there are lots of guns there so I might be intimidated. NOT!
Noting like stirring the pot to TRY to create more division. Sorry, we already got the memo.
The only possible source of unhappiness within the NRA over endorsing Trump over Hillary would come from the Fudds. They were never on the side of Constitutional liberties anyway, and I have long suspected that they are Democrats who happen to like their shotguns, and not much more than that. Given the all-out assault on the 2nd Amendment by the Democrats since the 1990s, the Fuddps are very much in the minority. All the rest of the gun owners in this country understand that we either win this fight or we lose everything near and dear to us. As such, the Fudds have been pushed aside, and no one much gives a damn what they think.
Otherwise, this very clearly biased article by Politico should be taken with at least several pounds of salt.
Good call, coach.
But then, she blew it right out of the gate:
"With its last-minute decision to formally endorse Donald Trump
"To endorse so early in the process is virtually unprecedented for the group
Trump: If you like your guns then you can keep your guns.
Jim should ban links to these leftist dumps like Politico...along with Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Salon, Slate and MSNBC.
Do you have any evidence of that?
I saw a similar report on CNN as I was clicking through...
Its baloney. Who else would NRA endorse? Who else is in the race? Its Trump or Clinton. Its a easy choice.
Politico? They couldn’t get the time of day right with three watches, Big Ben, and their cell phones.
Cruz is still scheming for delegates, filling slates, and there is plenty of media reports of behind the scenes efforts. No where has Cruz denied this or openly said stop. Even his bundlers here are FR have never said it all stopped, that they were told to stand down.
If some reason Trump drops out I nominate NRA’s Chris Cox for President.
Nah, they are often very informative, even hilarious. My daily read skips Huffington Post, but does include Politico, Talking Points Memo (Marshall’s an idiot but at least they are a bit more mature and respectable than Daily Kos), plus others. Good to read their spin on events. Like others, I think the UK media sites have better news about US politics than we typically get here.
Trump: CCW, carries
Clinton: Wants to implement an Australian style confiscation and ban
Yeah, I’m not seeing an issue here with regards to the endorsement. And I’m a lifetime NRA member...
If you believe one word that Clinton RAG, Politico utters...you are both a fool and badly ignorant!!! End of story!!!
I understand the party establishment being angry, Trump took their toy away, but Cruz supporters need to get over it. Like it or not, Trump beat Cruz in a fair fight. Yea, it was a bare knuckles fight, but still a fair fight.
At this point, the Cruz wing of the party is starting to resemble a religious cult. And no, I don't mean that as an insult, I mean it as a cold analysis of their activity. They are starting to resemble a cult.
But no other reports or evidence, just your inference, that Cruz is behind the nevertrumpers revolt at the NRA?
I was upset when I heard they endorsed Harry Reid years ago.
If it’s Hillary, Bernie or any DemoncRat versus Trump, who are they supposed to go with?
It is what it is. You go to War with the Military you have.
I doubt those folks Politico dug up are actually never-Trumpers. They are probably single issue gun rights supporters who are leery of Trump because of his somewhat murky past positions.
But not to worry. Are they seriously gonna vote for Hillary?
Its the job of Politico and its NYSlimes trained re[porter to sow doubt and discord among the gun lovers of the nation.
