Judge Brown is likely seen as polarizing in her own black community since she often invokes slavery in describing what she sees as the perils of liberalism. She have a hard time saying in 2016, what she openly spoke in 2003. But then again, SCOTUS has the personal protection of the Secret Service.
“In the heyday of liberal democracy, all roads lead to slavery,” she warns. “Society and the courts have turned away from the founders’ emphasis on personal responsibility toward a culture of government regulation and dependency that threatens fundamental freedoms,” Brown warns.
“We no longer find slavery abhorrent,” she told the conservative Federalist Society. “We embrace it.” and “If we can invoke no ultimate limits on the power of government, a democracy is inevitably transformed into a kleptocracy — a license to steal, a warrant for oppression.”
I was stunned to learn that the most slavery in fairly recent history was of the Irish (by the English). Far exceeded the number of black slaves, and vaguely recall the population of Ireland was reduced to 600,000 in those times. The Irish were sold into slavery all over the world, some into indentured service in early America, but most to the West Indies, where they died in slavery. Can’t put my hand on the article at the moment, but the numbers were staggering.
Gee, I like her even more now!
