It was supposed to be the Horst Wessel Lied, the Nazi Party song. But the Horst Wessel Lied was copyrighted, and to show the film in neutral countries, the studio would have had to pay royalties to the Nazis. So it was changed to Die Wacht am Rhein, which long predates the Nazis and was public domain.

Thanks for your (new to me!) historical tidbit...of interest to us "Casablanca" (1942) afficionadas.
This film is my personal all-time favorite in my "riveting" and/or "romantic", "adventurous", "great story lines" and "well-done productions" genre picks...followed by "GWTW" (1939), the original "Robin Hood" (1938), "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939) and "Northwest Passage" (1940)
I'll never forget the emotional Marseilles scene in Casablanca...it's etched in my memory.
