The banana peel craze was a deliberately manufactured hoax. Donovan was in on it and the theater group that operated in the auditorium of the old Episcopal church in SF actively promoted it after someone already stoned on something said in a group session, what if everyone thought bananas could get you high? I was there then, in 1967. Some of those people were kids I had known in Florida in St. Petersburg. You can see most of them on the cover of the Country Joe album Together. Joe married one of my friends from down home.

HA!!!! I remember that!! I tried it too.

My dad had several tobacco pipes. When he was at work I took one and filled it with ground Coffee. From what I remember, it wasn’t bad and smelled pretty good. The problem was when he got home and tried using it.
