The Rape of Nanking was undoubtedly an hideous atrocity-series of atrocities, really-with few precedents in contemporary Asian warfare.

That said, it would be hard to say it's the most gruesome, especially with over 4 decades of Maoist brutality to compare it to.

Also, I think a lot of people forget how long China has been around, and how horrific its history has been at points.

I'm thinking of the Taiping Rebellion in particular.
