My father always said, Poor people have poor ways.

Gypsies? Or are the serfs getting restless?
I was in the middle of purchasing a house when thieves got inside and stole all the copper and were in the middle of stealing all the hardware, like faucets, toilet handles, mirrored closets, etc. Of course, we dropped out of the deal but the point is that this is an epidemic in the US as well. Our local politicians should make it harder to sell scrap metal.
That happened to my neighbor. Between signing the papers and taking position, scrappers came in and took out the furnace, ductwork, etc.
It’s getting tough out there...
If they’re chopping down trees in the forests, they’re not really thieves, they’re just unlicensed lumberjacks :)
Happens here as well. You don’t dare leave a house empty for more than a few weeks, or the thieves will strip it........................
Undocumented metal workers and carpenters.................
I’ve always wondered if the people who steal copper, etc. are on drugs or just thieves. I figure that anyone who would risk electrocution is probably on drugs but maybe the people who steal appliances out of empty houses are just thieves.
When we had an ice storm one winter and people were without power for a week or more wood and generators were common targets.
It was one of the contractors who worked on the house.
I recall going into a pawn shop and seeing a 2.5 ton central A/C condenser unit sitting there with a price tag on it. Brand new, the hacksawed copper lines were still bright. Probably swiped from one of the houses being built in the area, before a new owner moved in.
To make it worse, the pawn shop also had an indoor pistol range, so the cops that frequented the place winked at that stuff.
Depending on the location, they may have been getting a kickback on the take.
No they shouldn’t make it harder to sell scrap, they should punish the **** out of people stealing stuff!
There’s a myriad of ways to recover scrap legitimately and the honest individual shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to sell it because of a bunch of hand wringers feeling bad about giving a tweaker a nice drying out session in a jail or on a chain gang..
In some rural areas, regulations are being passed to make it illegal for property owners to camp on their properties (for owner-building, security for neighbors’ properties, etc.). Watch what happens to the homes of established NIMBYs, after those who were camping are driven away.
Some people use scrap to build good and useful items. Some scrap is also used by small businesses to make useful products. But go ahead. It will help to bring the default process to a conclusion sooner and conclude the political/regulator debt regime.
This doesn’t surprise me at all. We recently moved into a house, and iIbought a bunch of Cedar for the garden. A bunch of 10ft planks (10’x20’ garden) and a 4x4 for corner posts was just over $200.... Been a couple years since iIwas at home with my parents, and iIdon’t remember any wood ever costing nearly as much...
And unless you notified your insurance company that your house was vacant, and paid the additional premium for insurance on a vacant building, you probably don't have coverage for your loss...
