Bangladesh hanged Islamist party leader Motiur Rahman Nizami on Wednesday for genocide and other crimes committed during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, the law minister said, a punishment that risked provoking an angry reaction from his supporters.
Nizami, head of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at Dhaka Central jail after the Supreme Court rejected his final plea against a death sentence imposed by a special tribunal for genocide, rape and orchestrating the massacre of top intellectuals during the war.
Nizami, 73, a former legislator and minister, was hanged at 12.01 a.m. local time, Law Minister Anisul Haq told Reuters.
Hundreds of people flooded the streets of the capital, Dhaka, to cheer the executions. "We have waited for this day for a long 45 years, said war veteran Akram Hossain. Justice has finally been served.
But the war crimes tribunal set up by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2010 has sparked violence and drawn criticism from opposition politicians, including leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, that it is victimising Hasina's political opponents.
Thousands of extra police and border guards were deployed in Dhaka and other major cities. Previous similar judgments and executions have triggered violence that killed around 200 people, mainly Jamaat activists and police.
Five opposition politicians, including four Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, have been executed since late 2013 after being convicted by the tribunal.
About 3 million people were killed, the government says, and thousands of women were raped during the 1971 war in which some factions, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, opposed the break from what was then called West Pakistan.

Pakistan really is the axis if not the center of Islamist evil.
Good. Better late than never!
More please.
One down, 1.5 billion to go.
A little-known chapter in history.
3 million dead, at least, and 95% of all Americans could not even tell you that Bangladesh once had any link to Pakistan.
I am a history geek. Most don’t even know about the India/Pakistan bloodbath at separation - something the Muslims themselves insisted on. Muslims chaff at the notion they are a minority in a country and that they would be ruled by non-Muslims.
Immediately after 9/11 my country brought in H1-B Visa workers from India.
My coworkers freaked out: Brown people who may want to kill us all! Folks were actually scared of them.
We talked to them so as to feel them out, and one of the Indians said not only were they not muslims, but one of them even had his entire family murdered by muslims.
“Thank goodness!” everybody said, which is both horrible and funny at the same time.
“my country brought in H1-B Visa workers from India. My coworkers freaked out: Brown people who may want to kill us all! Folks were actually scared of them.”
An entirely rational response.
BTW, what is your country?
Well, I’m a Texan, but at the time I was working in Silicon Valley.
So I guess my country is “The South”.
Sorry, I meant “my company”.
Here is a WW2 film about the nature of the Japanese religion around Bushido and how that explains Pearl Harbor and their abuse of prisoners and civilians. We won't see a film by the Pentagon about the nature of Islamists during this war.

I don't blame your co-workers at all - I blame the commander in chief at that time for not putting us on a war footing and explaining / identifying who the enemy is.
Look at Pakistan and Bangladesh(East Pakistan) on a 1971 map. How did Pakistan invade it’s eastern province without crossing India? Troops musta been stationed there in the first place.
Justice delayed is better than justice denied. 3 cheers.
“A good start”
There were no Americans who could have filled those jobs?
It's like Benedict Arnold or Banastre Tarleton made it into Jefferson's or Madison's cabinet -- only a lot worse.
Explanation? Muslims.
