In November, Maines public will be asked to decide whether lawful owners of firearms should be required to go to a gun dealer, pay a reasonable fee and be required to fill out a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Form 4473 to buy or sell a firearm. The referendums proponents claim that these requirements are easy, will make us safer, and that this will not be gun registration. Such claims are misleading.
Who will determine the amount of this reasonable fee? Why should the owner of lawful property, which he or she may have owned for decades, be suddenly required to pay a fee to sell that property? Anyone who has watched his or her dealer on hold with the ATF for 45 minutes can tell you there is nothing instant about the process.

The left is running out of time to get the guns. Panic is now setting in.

Never fear, they have an up and comer gun grabber presiding over the "safe act" in NYS - Andrew Cumo.
Sounds like a statute that can and will be easily ignored.
Yep. Hillary has made gun control the linchpin of her campaign, and states quite openly that she intends to bypass Congress on the matter. The DC government has already bypassed the Supreme Court by disregarding Heller. Which puts the entire package of legislating, interpreting, and enforcing whatever the Executive desires, in the hands of a President with no checks or balances. Dictatorship in every sense.
I was approached at least a dozen times to sign the petition to get it on the ballot - always refused. But it doesn't take that many signatures to get ballot access. I doubt the proposal passes, but it'll be back, just like a vampire.
I was approached and rejected them but there were a lot of females who took the bait with the promise of a “commonsense” end to ALL gun violence and ALL domestic violence in NV if it passes. The mommunists obtained twice as many sigs as required to get it on the ballot, and with the millions they’re pumping in, it’s liable to pass in NV. LV being the offender.
Great article. If purchase checks/registration were so benign why does the FBI ignore the law and fail to destroy the record checks accumulated over the years. It’s a hidden agenda to prepare for an eventual federal confiscation as the Dems have advocated we emulate Australia & Britain.
Unless the states think they can prohibit residents from buying guns in other states, then they will only be “registering” the most naive of gun buyers.
Just a few years ago, gun control in Nevada would have gone over like a Honeybaked Ham franchise in Tel Aviv. It's hard to believe this even got on the ballot.
It is. In Colorado estimates are that only 13% of private gun owners complied and there have been zip, zero, nada successful or even attempted prosecutions for violations of the law. The reason is that it is virtually impossible for law enforcement to prove when a private sale or trade took place assuming there is no check, receipt or other dated record to prove the transaction took place before or after the law changed.
Las Vegas is the main, as in most YUGE pop centers, the culprit in allowing this kind of crap to happen.
But having to show a photo ID to vote is impossible.
Yeah, ‘cause that’s racis’ or something. Weird huh?
Some greedy lawyers (are there any other kind?) should file class action law suite for conspiracy to deny a civil right.
It’s not reasonable since 2A is a right.
You don’t have to register to vote. All states have registration, but if you don’t register, you can still show up and vote.
Damn good point.
Well hell, that’s what the 2nd amendment is for. To kill dictators.
“Gun owners should be paranoid about Maines background check referendum”
Paranoid? It’s not that they should be merely paranoid but genuinely afraid.
