Washington (CNN)Republican officials who oppose Donald Trump as their party nominee have spent the last few days -- ever since the withdrawal from the race of Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich -- wondering if there is anything they could have done to prevent this outcome. Top officials of the Cruz campaign are convinced there is one specific step that could have stopped Trump -- and they blame Sen. Marco Rubio for not taking that step.
In early March, it became clear that Trump was well on his way to the nomination and would even likely defeat Rubio in his home state of Florida's March 15 primary. According to several sources close to Cruz, the Cruz campaign conducted several secret polls to see what the impact would be if Rubio joined Cruz as his running mate, with Cruz at the top of the ticket.

Yeah, sure, double down on ineligibility, that’s the ticket!!
I thought April 8, Wisconsin primary, was a "reset" and that the face of the race changed? I guess Ted was lyin' then, too?
He is supposed to be the genius. So why didn’t he do it?
If Trump had not entered the race, Cruz would have had the ticket.... IF he had been as bold as Trump has been.... which I doubt. If Trump had not entered the race, NONE of them would have had the fight to do what it would have taken. If Trump had not entered the race, we would not have witnessed the rise of the power structure in the GOP... and seen their utter fright and desperation at losing their kingdom.
Trump outted them all! No one else would have known it was possible to be loud, brash and bold enough to turn this mess on its ear ... we’d all still be in the same boat.... no one rocking it and no one trying to right this ship of disaster.
Even though I detest Fiorina, this is incredibly boorish.
Agree. You look back, Cruz rode Rrump’s coattails til Dec.
They took a page out of McCain’s book. He threw Sarah under the bus.
Oh sure.
The Cubanadian® and the anchor baby, take over the US and rule the world.
Cruz can’t get it through his head that most of the GOP voters didn’t want him.
iSnarly has to be hurt over this especially with the being accused of fooling around with Cruz by his wife, and then falling through the stage a few days before he dropped out.
with the bulging guts of both Cruz and Beck, one wonders if they are drinking buddies and eating alot of junk food together.
The only difference between the phony Ernest Angsley and Ted Cruz is that Cruz doesn’t have a hairpiece... or does he????
Because Trump took out Jeb so it saved the work and $$$ for Cruz to have to do it himself.
It is up to the candidate to appeal to the electorate. The simple fact is Cruz is not all that likeable. His message didn’t resonate with the voting public. There wasnt much difference between the Cruz and Trump platforms so it comes down to personality.
Additionally, JEB was suppose to win tbe primary not Cruz. Cruz took over the role when JEB and Rubio did poorly in FL. JEB dropped out when Christy endorsed Trump. Christy was the ultimate establishment insider. JEB knew Christy had access to tbe GOPe playbook.
What an amazing eel and backbiter oily Felito is.
What a mendacious and treacherous rat. Anyone who deals with him now has no excuse for being surprised at his disloyalties.
“Everybody is keeping their distance! Lonely Girl....”
By that point, she probably WANTED it that way!
Supposedly it has to do with paperwork. If they quit, the campaign has to turn in financial paperwork within a short period of time. By suspending the campaign, they extend that timeframe significantly.
At least, that’s how my hubby explained it after hearing it on NPR. He apparently tunes in when he’s driving to hear what the other side is saying. I guess he has a much stronger stomach than me, lol.
