Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law offering a hectare (2.5 acres) of land for free in Russia's Far East.

The move, which is open to all Russian citizens, aims to boost the population and the economy in the vast remote region.

Estimates by Russia's Minister for the Development of the Far East, Aleksandr Galushka, predicts that the project could increase the region's population to 36 million people, from the current 6.4 million.

According to the bill, the land will be free of payment or tax for five years and may be used for any lawful purpose. However, it can only be rented, sold, or given away after the initial five-year period.

Russians have already started applying for a bid in...

If only my grandaddy hadn't been so eager to leave back around WW I, I could now be the proud owner of my very own farm in Siberia. See what I missed?/s

There are something like 150 million Chinese on their side of the border; and only about 6 million Russians.

Who’s going to own that area after a hundred years?

Hence, the desire on Russia’s part to increase their own population.

But 2.5 acres isn’t enough. The US gave about 600 acres to farmers. Russia has enough land to do that. It just has no modern tradition of small independent farmers.

In the seminal, prescient work “Camp of the Saints”, Hordes of Chinese settlers invade Siberia and there is absolutely nothing Russia can do about it.

It was all determined by demographics and population.

I almost owned a square inch in Alaska.

2.5 acres isn’t much.

Populate it with death row inmates who will then have to learn to farm to survive.

You get what you pay for. In this case, less.

Russia has ‘only’ 100 million citizens. 36 million will move? I don’t think so. Immigration from a place other than China. Welfare recipients from the U.S. could take their EBT cards with them for more than 5 years b4 getting cut off.

Putin should offer that “free Land” to all the Syrian refugees he can find and put them there. (Chances are most would freeze to death the first year.) How inconvenient.

Stalin did that already.

The trains would stop in the middle of the frozen Taiga
the prisoners would be dumped out and told to “build”
a camp. They died like flies.

The Russians have centuries of experience doing just that. Maybe not death row per se (that was done in the basement of the Lubyanka), but the outcome was the same nonetheless.

Stalin had development on his mind more than punishment. We could help them.

At least not sine the 1930s, when Stalin ordered them exterminated.

If Putin put Barack Obama in charge of the border with China the entire area would be crawling with Chinese in 6 months.

If they made it fifty hectares, they might have some takers.

The would allow a big enough unit to make at least a subsistence living off the land, and a worthwhile piece of land to justify later consolidation int a really workable agricultural enterprise. With enough agricultural enterprises, an industrial base and demand for non-agricultural employment, they will come.

The land beyond the Urals was a frontier once before, when HORDES of German peasants were lured there for promises of land, and there was a large ethnic German population before the royal family was deposed and the Soviet Union was formed.

A large part of the Kulaks who were liquidated by Stalin in the 1920’s and 1930’s, when farm collectives were being formed, were descendants of these same German immigrants.
