A white South African waitress who was refused a tip by an Oxford student involved in the Rhodes Must Fall campaign has received more than $6,000 in "sympathy" tips after an online campaign on her behalf.
Cape Town restaurant employee Ashleigh Shultz was allegedly told by activist Ntokozo Qwabe that he would not give her any service charge on his bill until her "fellow white people" returned South Africa's land to its black population.
In an encounter that he described on Facebook, Mr Qwabe gleefully recounted that Ms Shultz had "burst into typical white tears", adding that he was "unable to stop smiling" after the incident.
His post drew a furious response online, with Mr Qwabe accused of bullying behaviour. Defenders of Ms Shultz have since raised $6,495 for her, according to a Gofundme page set up in her support.
"The young lady was not declined a tip for her service, she was declined a tip for being white," said one poster on the page, Jonathan Weltman, who accused Mr Qwabe of acting like the kind of bigot he professed to oppose.
The Rhodes Must Fall movement has campaigned for the removal of a statue of colonialist Cecil Rhodes from Oxford's Oriel College.
Mr Qwabe is a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, and receives money from the Rhodes estate to study.

One of the online campaigns was triggered by an outraged South African, Sihle Ngobese, who decided to pay the tip himself and said: ‘Qwabe is someone that claims to speak to the downtrodden and the disenfranchised yet he has the audacity to bully a working-class young woman.
The restaurant waitress deserves this treatment because of her “white privilege”...(sheesh)

I have heard this over and over again and my son who worked as a waiter in HS and college said this all the time. He also said they’re the most demanding, the loudest and most obnoxious, and leave the biggest messes. And of course, never a tip.

Petitioning Oxford University to REVOKE Ntokozo Qwabe's scholarship or initiate disciplinary actions

Dear Louise Richardson -Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford
Please accept this signed petition as an official request for your institution to revoke Mr Ntokozo Swab’s Oxford scholarship, or at the very least, initiate disciplinary action for his recent cowardly and disrespectful behaviour displayed towards a working class female citizen in a Cape Town cafe. Mr Ntokozo Qwabe and friend violated a person’s dignity, publicly degraded and humiliated her, and created a highly offensive situation which Mr Ntokozo Qwabe has since taken great pleasure in narcissistically boasting over her reaction across social media.
Mr Ntokozo Qwabe clearly does not uphold the values expected of an institution such as Oxford University and his actions have ultimately brought your educational establishment’s image into disrepute.
We ask the university to consider the irony that Mr Ntokozo Qwabe is pursuing a career in Law when his personal conduct in this situation is highly questionable. Whilst it is understood that student confidentiality is important for any educational establishment, and it’s likely that you will be obligated to honour this confidentiality to “protect” him, but please note that Mr Ntokozo Qwabe did not display any such integrity or honourable behaviour towards the waitress. The incident took place at Obz Cafe in the Western Cape, South Africa, has ignited a backlash against Mr Qwabe, who was branded a racist bully. Miss Schultz’s friends said she had already been feeling low as her mother has cancer. One said: ‘She has a very sick mother she cares for, and had to move flat recently and is worried about all of this. She did burst into tears because she is having a tough time at present.’
Stacey-Leigh Wood, a friend of Miss Schultz, said: ‘This is so sweet of everyone that donated. That other idiot [Mr Qwabe] still needs to be slapped though.’

Yes and no. The Dutch had a trading stop there in the 1600's where they traded for food stock from the Khoikhoi, who were nomads. The blacks that live in the area now came from Botswana through the Soweto and are known as the San people. The Khoikhoi looked more like the Aborigines of Australia than the ethnic blacks that live there now and are all but assimilated in the current population.
