Former U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett, of Utah, who shied away from the spotlight but earned a reputation as someone who knew how to get things done in Washington, has died. He was 82.
Bennett assistant Tara Tanner said he died Wednesday from complications of pancreatic cancer and a recent stroke.
The Republican was first elected in 1992 and was widely seen at home as politically moderate, which at times put him at odds with Utahs highly conservative Republican base. His middle-of-the-road reputation led to his ouster in 2010 at the state convention by delegates fueled by tea party anger.

"Tea Party audited by IRS --I'm OKAY with that..!"
How old is The Hatchling?
He died from complications .....pancreatic cancer and a recent stroke ...
Prayers for his family and may he rest in peace.
It may be inappropriate but if Utah’s Governor was Democrat he/she could appoint someone to finish out the term thereby giving an incumbent the upper hand. Something to think about. There could be 25 70+ year-olds in the senate. That’s too many.
Same as SCOTUS
Yeah, let’s all crap on a dead guy.
Bennett was ousted in 2010.
Mike Lee has his old Senate seat.
Let the guy rest in peace.
Looks like there are currently 6 senators over the age of 80 (5 or which are Republicans), and a further 18 over age 70 (8 Dem, 8 GOP, and 2 “independent”).
With all due respect, Mike Lee was a strong candidate with connections.
rip
“The former senator also became a vocal critic of the conservative wing of the party. He repeatedly said it was pushing the party away from mainstream Americans in favor of ultra-conservatives in the model of Barry Goldwater, the Republican nominee in 1964 who was soundly defeated in the presidential election.
Tributes from public figures came in Wednesday night.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said in a statement that Bennett was a friend and counselor.”
Wasn’t his father, Wallace Bennett, a conservative? Al Simpson of WY is “moderate”; his father, Milward Simpson, was conservative.
It’s tradition around here.
Not a fan of him politically but people have families. What you typed was disgusting and inappropriate.
Because if we don’t, we won’t.
That’s a rude headline.
Prayers for his family.
