Late last week President Obama announced a new push for additional federal "smart" gun technology funding. After grabbing headlines and much attention, the move received praise from gun control groups like Michael Bloomberg's Everytown and criticism from law enforcement, the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
But an issue flying under the radar in Obama's announcement is the Administration's decision to move forward with gun control measures through the Social Security system. Late last year it became clear if an individuals needs financial help managing Social Security benefits, the agency can deem that person mentally unfit to purchase a firearm. This policy is already in place at the Veteran's Administration, where people who have been assigned a "representative payee" have been permanently placed into the NICS background check system as ineligible to purchase a firearm without due process, a hearing or a trial. As background from the LA Times, bolding is mine:

Guns? What guns?
What is there to manage? Just set it up for direct deposit.
By any means... And there are still people who insist that Obama has no intention of confiscating guns or denying 2nd Amendment rights to anyone.
This stupid MO FO is completely OUT OF CONTROL
Looks like they need to buy their guns used from a private seller.
It would be nice if there existed an opposition party to counter act this loose cannon.
“Shall not be infringed” also applies to social security INSURANCE, for which we pay premiums our entire working lives.
Social Security is NOT an “entitlement”. We paid the premiums, faithfully, and now we collect the annuity from those payments.
Using the back donor threat to ban guns through the withholding of those funds is unconstitutional on two levels. Using the “mental instability” argument is a slippery slope, as the government will be the ones to declare such “instability”, based on factors such as party affiliation, ideology, and blog postings.
It’s a rigged game, designed to accomplish Hitler’s goal of “disarming the people” to create a dictatorship. Call your Rep, and raise hell about this...it’s time for this $6/+ to stop.
I will sue Social Security Secretary.
Could be worth billions!
What guns? Gramps has no guns. Lost them in a boating accident years ago. Dad too. Uncle too. It was a sad occasion.
And a piss poor return on investment at that for paying over 15% of earnings over 30 plus years. Any private fund would have up for RICO charges.
Some people suffering from dementia and such have their money deposited into a third party account, usually a family member who pays their bills for them. Somehow I doubt those people are out buying guns in the first place.
I cannot wait to go to a Washington lawyer if they notify me. I will sue the President, the Secretary of Social Security, the FBI and any other federal agent or agency that damages me or my reputation this way.
No can do if you want NFA items.
LOL. You actually believe that? It might be what they tell you, but that money you paid in is gone - long gone - spent on bike paths, welfare payments, buying Viagra for inmates in prison, bridges to nowhere in Alaska, etc.
I have searched the Constitution and can find nothing that qualifies gun ownership and the need for a license. The 2nd Amendment IS my license to own a gun!
I sold mine to a guy who said he likes to hunt..Can’t remember his name.
It is not an entitlement. It is an unfunded benefits program.
BTW, corporate pension funding used to be totally funded by the companies, but all that changed in the late 70s (or so), and, just like SS, there is no money “in a lockbox” for those juicy corporate pensions.
I was the responsible payee for my Aunt, who has dementia. It was more of a transitional thing to get her finances set up so she qualified for Medicare and SSI to help pay for her Assisted Living.

Hmmm, Every Member of Congress and the entire Government should then be BANNED FROM GUNS, They have NEVER BEEN ABLE to Manage the Governments Finances.
