The total bill to taxpayers: $1.3 billion in benefits to "unaccompanied children," more than double what the federal government spent in 2010, according to an analysis of the administration's programs for illegal minors from the Center for Immigration Studies. The average Social Security retirement benefit is $14,772.

Anyone present in the United States illegally should be permanently barred from any legal reentry, whether as a student, a tourist, or an immigrant, and should be barred from any path to citizenship or legal residence. It should not cost very much at all to store them until a bus is ready and then put them on the road home, particularly if we fine their employers to cover the costs.
