"Midtown Manhattan cathedral engulfed in flames: 'Irreplaceable' 160-year-old Orthodox Christian church is consumed by fire" A 160-year-old Orthodox Christian cathedral in New York has been completely destroyed after a huge fire tore through it on Sunday
The blaze broke out at the Serbian Cathedral of Saint Sava on 25th Street in Manhattan's Flatiron district at around 7pm.
It is not known how the fire started, though it is believed to have broken out on the first floor of the building before consuming the interior and roof.
An FDNY spokesman said that nobody was believed to be inside the building at the time the fire started, and there have been no reports of injuries.

Orthodox Easter today. Probably arson imho.
Could be someone needed it gone and picked today to make it look like anti-Christian terrorism. Very sad.

I hate to be boring, but don't forget that real candles are used in traditional churches, especially on Easter. They cause a lot of fires. A Byzantine church near us recently finished replacing most of its roof and interior after a fire a year and a half ago that started with an altar boy setting down a candle in the wrong place.
Unless the fire investigators find evidence of probable arson (and in NYC, they're good), I'd say a candle is the likely cause.
By the way, I also believe it's more important that we use real candles in this life than that we eliminate all risk from this life.

This is so sad, especially on Easter Sunday. I know Orthodox Churches have a lot of candles but I can’t help but wonder if this was arson. After all, it was a Serbian Orthodox Church and Albanian muslims are known for burning Serbian churches in Kosovo. Also, Serbians are pretty much hated by liberals because the Serbs had the nerve to defend themselves against Bosnian and Albanian terrorists.
My prayers and condolences go out to this beautiful church and its members.

The exterior walls are brick and stone - the floor and roof structures are probably wood. Note that the story says the fire was "consuming the interior and roof."
Irreplaceable is not a building, but the faith of the congregation lost to poor formation. Spend the monies/energies there, and build in them a truly beautiful church.

My church is steel studs and cinder block. Very little combustible yet we had to add an extensive sprinkler system.
