I think thug is derived from a group or tribe from India? The "Thuggee" Kali cult in India.
Kali represents the violence of the protective mother for her children. Thuggees decided they could invoke her to rob and murder people. The British decided to shoot and hang the Thuggees wherever they found them.
The British won, thank God.
