The Texas senator was in Knightsville, Indiana, at the gym where the movie “Hoosiers” was filmed. Cruz referenced how much he loved Hoosiers and added, “The amazing thing is, that basketball ring in Indiana, it's the same height as it is in New York City and every other place in this country.”

Everybody flubs a line now and then, but to flub one regarding basketball in Indiana was awkward.
You get the prize. A one week paid vacation to Murica!
As a minister I get numerous opportunities to louse up lines in public. It happens.
Basketball ring is unusual in that there’s no natural alternative phrase that would make your brain/tongue come up with ‘ring’.
It’s like something you’d expect a foreign speaker of English to say as they hunted for an appropriate English word to describe what they could see in their mind’s eye.
Basketball as a 3rd language

I respectfully disagree.
Cruz plays in pickup games, even when he isn’t picked for a team.

I don’t get the reference to the basketball hoop being same height in New York as it is in Indiana. Did anybody say New York used a different height?
