During the Maine GOP caucus on March 5, candidate Ted Cruz came out on top with about 46 percent of the vote. Based on the caucus result Cruz was allocated 12 delegates, leaving nine for Trump and two for John Kasich.
cruz quoteMaines Governor Paul LePage coordinated with the Cruz camp, the Trump camp and the Kasich camp to insure the state convention would provide equitable distribution of the delegates based on the caucus result.
This is called a unity ticket, with delegates assigned based on the results of the caucus.
However, during the states convention this weekend the Cruz campaign reneged on the agreement and stabbed the caucus voters in the back. As they have in other state contests, Team Cruz manipulated the delegate selection to gain 19 of the 2o delegates. CNN has more on the events:
(Via CNN) [ ] Cruz collected 19 of the 20 spots up for grabs, with the 20th spot going to Maine Gov. Paul LePage, whos supporting GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
The fight at the states convention Saturday underscores the intense battle for delegates heading into the Republican National Convention in July. Cruzs campaign is pushing for every delegate it can collect to prevent Trump from winning the 1,237 he needs to win the nomination outright and force a floor fight. Even with Saturdays developments, both Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich need to win more delegates than are available in the remaining primary contests to win the GOP nomination on the first ballot.
Ahead of the vote, LePage accused the Cruz campaign of going back on a promise to back a unity slate of the states delegates, a move he portrayed as stabbing us in the back.
In a statement, LePage said, We reached a deal with Cruzs national campaign to put up a unity slate that would honor the wishes of the thousands of Mainers who voted at caucus. But Cruzs Northeast Political Director David Sawyer lied to us and broke the deal. Sawyer stabbed us in the back, reneged on the unity slate, and betrayed the people of Maine.
Though he singled out Sawyer in his statement, LePage said the actions were emblematic of the Cruz campaign. As we have seen throughout the country, Cruzs national campaign is run by greedy political hooligans.
Hey Cruz, err Hillery supporters try to defend this one.
Imagine if Cruz had won the South and was 300 delegates ahead of Trump and Trump tried to pull these shenanigans.
You johnny come lately Trump operatives should not be using terms like lying Ted etc...
It does not engender unity necessary for besting the Dem nominee later.
Any additional second Ted Cruz stays in the race, he hurts himself.
The only thing that can come out of it is people laughing at his stupidity.
But...but...but, Cruz is the only “principled conservative”, Rush Limbaugh told me so!
Cruz’s lying is lying and deserves to be called out. Don’t deflect by trying to blame the messenger and distract from the fact that the Cruz campaign is lying again.
So obviously when it comes to voting in actual people to those spots, the majority will put in all (or most) of the delegates to support their guy. I think it was over 2000 people picking the 20 delegates out of a group of about 200 contenders.
I wonder if the Governor got anything in writing from Cruz or Kasich?
I think more and more states will be moving away from the unbound delegates. It may have been a wise course of action “back when” and the locals could elect someone that in the past they could trust to represent their best interests. A local politician, prominent businessman, etc. But the caucuses are well beyond that now.
The republican party is toast and your sentiment is moot. Lyin’ Ted is calld that for a reason. I’m sure you can figure out why. Many of us have become repubs in name ONLY, and only because we were forced to in order to even be able to vote.
Therebis zero party loyalty as a result. Many of us vote according to the candidate’s qualities regardless of party. Loyalists don’t need to be told anything about loyalty. They already are.
You are solely helping Hillary.
He has a real problem...habitual liar. Something is way off with this guy.
Then Ted should stop lying and cheating and people will stop calling him out on it.
YOU are the one helping Hillary.
>You johnny come lately Trump operatives should not be using terms like lying Ted etc...
I’ll stop the term using the moment he stops lying and stabbing the voters in the back. Let me know when that happens.
More treachery by Cruz and his minions. Being a religious man, he should know that treachery is the 9th and most severe circle of Hell, because it’s the most insidious form of human deceit.
Who votes for this guy?
Ted Cruz loyalist? Sounds like the same loyalists who supported King George during the revolutionary war and worked agaisnt their brothers in arms..
>Who votes for this guy?
Not the voters.
It does not engender unity necessary for besting the Dem nominee later.
When Ted accused Trump of fostering violence when the Bernie and Soros agitators were attacking Trump supports, Ted showed his true colors as a liar. Screw party unity. If lying Ted and the GOP elite steal the nomination, then any third party looks more honorable than the Republicans.
Clinton/Cruz 2016
The problem is these Cruz delegates were sent forward from their counties all over the country, to the state conventions.
There were few to none TRUMP supporters who bothered with attending their precinct meeting, which sends them as delegates to county conventions, which sends them on to state conventions, where they hope to be elected to the National Convention as a delegate.
Voters have learned that their is much more to coughing up your ballot on primary day and returning to the golf course or the mall by late afternoon.
We have to participate, or those who do will hand us our head.
THAT is what is going on.
