“...that honor should rightly belong to Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Toms Cabin, the most important of all American novels.”
Seriously? I have nothing against Stowe, but writing a book is nothing like risking your life to save others. Also, I can think of many other American women who are, arguably, more influential than Stowe. Besides, Tubman was a “gun-touting Republican” as I saw someone say. It works for me. At least it’s not Eleanor Roosevelt, Margret Sanger, or, heaven forfend, Hillary Clinton.
A black, a woman, an acknowledgement of the fight to end slavery, all accomplished with one choice. That works.
This new $20 isn't going to be issued until 2030. There probably won't be paper money by then.
Keeping it real, I'm more concerned about what's happening that will destroy the economic future of the US. If those wise folks in DC could turn that around, I wouldn't care if they put Bugs Bunny on the dollar bill!
In terms of affecting the country, Tubman was a nothing. Stowe had massive influence. Lincoln Jokingly credited her with causing the civil war.
In terms of impact to the entire nation, Stowe was massive, and Tubman was nothing.
Also, I can think of many other American women who are, arguably, more influential than Stowe.
And if you put them on the list of All influential Americans, the women won't score high enough on the list to warrant being placed on currency at all.
We have no Margaret Thatcher in our history. We have no women of major significance.
