Ted Olsen is a classic example of this. In Bush v. Gore, he would stand in front of Judge Sanders Saul in Talahassee / Leon County or the SCOTSOF, or SCOTUS and in response to questions, recite the citation and the law or case itself, while still thumbing through the books to find the text of the statute or cited case!

Unfortunately, he went to the dark side and argued for gay marriage.

Given my choice of Gore in 2000, or no gay marriage, I’ll take W anytime.

Algore would not have made gay marriage just permissible. He would have made it mandatory!

Sometimes, you just have to reach a bit far.

Second tour ‘Nam. UCMJ defendants could ask any officer to be their defense counsel.

One of my 11ACR E-7s got busted for “frolicking” in the nude with a local bar girl on a fire escape of the Rex Hotel.

I got him off (from a very cool Trial Board of combat officers, not some REMFs) under a 1888 Army Regulation, never repealed, that allowed “Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers not be wearing a standard Army uniform, but to be attired in a uniform commensurate with the sport in which they are engaged.”

One of the LTCs on the Board later bought me a drink, not for winning the case, but making my argument with a straight face.

Sleep well.
