This republic was never a monarchy, but it sure as heck was not founded as a democracy. When the U.S. Constitution was written, states had their own rules for selecting public officials. Most U.S. Senators, for example, were elected by their state legislatures or appointed by the governors of their states.

a republican form of government is simply a non-monarchy and it is almost always a democracy of some form.
