I am wondering whether the RNC/GOPestablishment are using these as trial balloons to see if they can get away from citizen voting in primaries altogether.

It would certainly make it easier for their selectees to get the nominations.

Recall that Romney sought advice from McCain on how to circumvent the ‘wacko birds’ in 2012.

Recall that Jeb Bush sough advice from McCain on how to lose the primaries and still win the nomination.

All the RNC needs the citizenry for is their donations — and they can rely on big business for those.

The first primaries were around 1920. Before that, the party process was all smoky back room stuff.

Rewind 100 years before even that, to the time the constitution was being discussed, and IIRC, one George Mason was making remarks about being careful about spreading the vote around, because once given, it is really hard to take away.

Giving the vote to a decadent electorate is doom for the country. We're doomed.

I don’t know. Seems to me the public NEVER or rarely used to get to vote directly on nominees. Then in the 70s there was a big push to reform the system so the public would have more say, and that’s how we got the primary system we have in most places today, but some states still don’t do it that way.

I say down with the whole two party system frankly. There’s no way for enough factions to get adequate representation.
