Goodbye, Illinois: residents are leaving for other states
Chicago Trib ^ | 4/16/16

Even on days when the temperature is above zero, Illinois struggles to keep people here. They're leaving, in droves, for states with sunnier economic opportunities.

New census data and other figures reveal the cold hard truth: More people are moving away than coming, tipping Illinois last year into the dreadful category of states with declining populations. From July 2013 to July 2014, Illinois shrank by about 10,000 residents in all, joining other states in decline such as West Virginia, Connecticut and Alaska.

When demographer William Frey of the Brookings Institution analyzed the annual Census Bureau estimates, two facts jumped out at him. First, Florida overtook New York to become the third-most-populous state (after California and Texas). And second, Illinois is badly leaking people.

"The faucet is starting to turn up in terms of moving to the Sun Belt," Frey tells us. "Obviously states in the Northeast and Midwest, like Illinois, are going to be part of that surge." But still: "I was quite surprised by the Illinois out-migration and that there is negative growth."

My wife is from Illinois, and most of her relatives still live there with winters in Floriduh, Arizona or Texas.

In spite of the summer heat and tornadoes, they have friends and family there, don’t live in the Chicago Area, and they like Illinois in spite of being conservatives.

They don’t take any Chicago newspapers and don’t watch Chicago TV news stations. If they don’t leave Illinois for good shortly after high school or finishing college. They seem to stay there. They live in conservative bubbles away from Chicago and liberals.

We see the same pattern out here on the West Coast. A lot conservatives in Washington and Oregon don’t live in the Seattle, Portland and university areas controlled by liberals. They get in their RVs in late October and head to
the desert area of S California, Nevada and Arizona to avoid the wet cold miserable winters in the NW. I5 South during late October/Early November looks like a moving RV/Trailer herd.

About Easter time to the end of April, they head back north to their nice homes, conservatitve towns and their conservative friends (many of whom head south with the herd and with them in October.) Basically they ignore the liberals in Spokane, Portland and in the liberal university cities/towns during that time.

Cold truth: It’s not winter that’s driving people out of Illinois
,
What’s cooled the affection of the people and bunesses here and elsewhere toward this area is the glacial speed with which leaders in Springfield and Chicago have moved to address financial problems and other urgent matters dragging everyone down.

Trying to turn up the heat on these people has been like trying to light a match on a windy day.

Not one but two national moving companies recently reported ushering enough households out of this state last year to make Illinois seem a draining bathtub.

Allied Van Lines said it moved more households out of Illinois last year than from any other state, followed by Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan. Illinois was No. 3 for United Van Lines, trailing New York and New Jersey.

Hard working, law abiding decent people are leaving ‘problematic’ states with high taxes, high crime, and rapidly changing demographics. The resulting relocations will give rise to some interesting population realignments in this country that will have profound implications.

The suburbs north of Chicago are still okay. But the place resembles one big strip mall. Chicago is slowly turning into Detroit. Thanks Dems!

The article says we go to the sunbelt. That is not correct. We go to the JOBS belt, which happens to be the belt with less government.

You are so right about refugees from the north (Flint, Detroit, Cleveland as well as IL). I have met many of my fellow refugees, both skilled and unskilled, R and D. They bring their view of the world and politics with them.

Nobody is trying to re-educate them and wake them up as to the reality of why there are jobs in TX, GA, FL, NC and not in IL and other union big gov places.

With all due respect, not to be a curmudgeon, but Wiki is not constantly updated. The statistic has a citation from 2012...

It’s the Chicago area that is ruining it for the rest of the state. Downstate IL is very conservative; when I go down south to see my brother, I like passing by Effingham, with the huge cross by the highway.

Is this story related to the Mizzou story about the students leaving after the BLM take over?

Sounds to me as if the Civil War has not yet ended and the South is in the process of winning.

The south is ‘winning’ tens of thousands of liberals who want to bring their views with them.

Conservatives from the north bring their northern views with them.

I live in Wheeling, IL. My wife, Nicole, is a pastor, and she wants to leave Illinois. This year, she applied for jobs in MI, FL, OH, and AZ.
