Kerry: Shooting down Russia jets 'would have been justified'(!?)

The US military would have been within its rights to shoot down Russian aircraft that flew close to one of its warships in the Baltic Sea, Secretary of State John Kerry says.

Two Russian jets flew within metres of the ship on Monday, US officials said.

Russia's defence ministry said the Su-24 fighter jets "turned away in observance of all safety measures" after observing the USS Donald Cook.

Mr Kerry criticised the gesture and said contact had been made with Moscow.

"We condemn this kind of behaviour," he told the Miami Herald and CNN Espanol in a joint interview.

"It is reckless. It is provocative. It is dangerous. And under the rules of engagement, that could have been a shoot-down."

Exactly!

And what are US warships doing in the bloody BALTIC when the real problems are in the Mediterranean, the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, not to mention the South China Sea?

“That was an act of war. We should have shot them down and alerted to DEFCON 1.”

You have zero idea of the facts. First of all, yes 30 feet is indeed international airspace. Maybe you would like to explain the TFR regulating airspace above a ship in international waters. (Pro tip, there isn’t one)

Look, we all miss the cold war. It’ll be ok.

02/11/2008... U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers, including one that buzzed an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend, The Associated Press has learned.

06/15/2015....In the video, a Su-24 aircraft appears in the distance, then zooms by the USS Ross — a guided-missile destroyer.(In the Black Sea)

04/14/2014...The Pentagon confirmed Monday that a Russian Sukhoi Su-24, known within NATO as a Fencer, made 12 passes of Navy destroyer the USS Donald Cook on Saturday evening. The jet came within 1,000 yards of the ship at an altitude of roughly 500 feet above sea level.

Just to highlight a few instances...Wake up Josh Earnest

“I remember this stuff happened all the time. Ivan would fly all sorts of planes including Bear and Backfire bombers right through a carrier task force.”

That’s a fact. What made this different is the the repeated passes.

Contrast this response with what happened with the US Navy vessel and Iran.

LOL. I see Barry and the Neocons have convinced some folks the Cold War they were so intent on restarting should be fought by different rules, like, "We Nuke You, Bassard" the same as the Norks do.

Sorry, but this stuff went on for decades and going to DEFCON 1 over it would have been completely stupid then just like doing so would be completely stupid now.

Kerry and his pals in the White Hut and at State think they're dealing with a whole new world when in reality the only thing that's new is the degree the people in charge in DC believe their own propaganda and consequently live in a world of illusion rather than living in reality.

What made this different is the the repeated passes.

I think they were trying to tease the ship into lighting everything up while it was well in range of a ton of land based sensors that could capture every little glitch and nuance.

We would have been perfectly justified in splash these aircraft.

Having done so, it would be irresponsible not to raise the DEFCON.

General Buck Turgidson, is that you?

Or maybe you’re Captain Eric Finlander of the USS Bedford?

Ships also rubbed paint on occasion.

Sometimes exclusively below the waterline. (Although technically only one ship had paint removed, the other vessel had anechoic coating removed...)

A new op-ed published by the Global Times, the mouthpiece of the ruling Chinese Communist Party, claims that Russia “humiliated” an “arrogant” United States when its warplanes buzzed a U.S. Navy ship in the Baltic Sea earlier this week.

ON BOARD THE U.S.S. JOHN C. STENNIS, in the South China Sea — As it tries to persuade Beijing to abandon its military buildup in the South China Sea, the Obama administration has been reluctant to describe its approach as a revival of “containment,” the Cold War strategy aimed at preventing the spread of Communism. It insists that its policies in Asia are neither targeted at China nor focused on military measures, as containment was against the Soviet Union.

But on a six-day visit to India and the Philippines this week, Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter left little doubt that China is one of the Pentagon’s primary concerns in the region — and that the United States intends both to strengthen alliances and move more hardware and troops here to counter China’s growing military reach.

From John Kerry, veteran of a curiously short 4 month tour in Vietnam. Was sent packing by his own squadron mates. You know the rest.
