The vast majority of Americans say they prefer lower prices instead of paying a premium for items labeled Made in the U.S.A., even if it means those cheaper items are made abroad, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll.
While presidential candidates like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are vowing to bring back millions of American jobs lost to China and other foreign competitors, public sentiment reflects core challenges confronting the U.S. economy. Incomes have barely improved, forcing many households to look for the most convenient bargains instead of goods made in America. Employers now seek workers with college degrees, leaving those with only a high school degree who once would have held assembly lines jobs in the lurch. And some Americans who work at companies with clients worldwide see themselves as part of a global market.
Nearly three in four say they would like to buy goods manufactured inside the United States, but those items are often too costly or difficult to find, according to the survey released Thursday. A mere 9 percent say they only buy American.

It would depend on what they're buying. Some things might be perfectly acceptable to purchase at a discount, knowing full well that you might throw it away in a year or two. I have Craftsman tools that I've had for 20 years, and will likely last much longer. I also have a few "one-off" tools that might've been made in Mexico or China, and although they might not last as long as the Craftsmen tools, I'm fine with it because I judged the price to be appropriate for my needs.
Well, if the “Vast Majority of Americans” were still Americans this poll might be different.

We bought cheap made-in-China kitchen stuff including can openers for years. Over and over.I think I needed a new one every year.
I finally paid extra for a made-in-America can opener and it’s now about five years old. Saved me money.
Sad that UAW refuses to build American cars. They like to pretend to, though.
JFTR, Hyundai is South Korean.
VW, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Honda/Acura, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia and others make cars and light truck class vehicles in the USA.
In 1990 in Japan, it was a status item to have a Toyota, which was made in the USA.
The Big - three had failed to keep themselves competitive on designs and quality for decades, and forfeited market share.
They do not understand the economics of scale and distribution in markets. If more were made here, the price would be lower than at present and they would be easier to find.
Love your can opener story.
I stopped buying them about 10 years ago and use the old fashioned ones.
I’ve also bought more toasters, dust busters, and hair dryers.
I avoid Black and Decker.
So much junk...
.
It was far better when US Workers built AMERICAN products that led the world in quality and inn ovation. That was before the brainwashing started that foreign was better.
I agree!
Hmmmmmmm and exactly WHY are you out of work? BECAUSE YOUR JOB went overseas?
