Social Security still paying potentially bogus disability claims 3 years after fraud exposed

Investigators identified nearly 2,000 cases of potentially phony disability claims stemming from a massive Social Security fraud scheme, but three years after the scam was first exposed, the government says it’s still struggling to stop the payments.

Only slightly more than 300 cases have been disqualified, and Social Security is still “in the process of effectuating those terminations,” the agency told The Washington Times just days after the accused ringleader and two lead accomplices were indicted on federal fraud charges.

Despite three investigations into suspicions of massive fraud, Social Security officials say they are assuming all of the applications are genuine until they can prove otherwise. That means taxpayers are on the hook for millions of dollars in potentially bogus payments while investigators carry out case-by-case reviews.

“They should have been suspended until they were proved disabled,” said former Sen. Tom Coburn, who led a congressional investigation that first exposed the scam in 2013.

Since then, two other probes — one by Social Security’s inspector general and now one by federal prosecutors — have sustained the accusations and led to charges announced last week against Eric C. Conn, a Kentucky lawyer; psychologist Alfred Adkins; and David B. Daugherty, a former federal judge.

What a mess. A lawyer, psychologist and former federal judge devise a scam that's cost SSD over a half billion dollars that they know of.

Maybe they had some inside help at the Social Security Administration.

I think that some of these government crooks delay in the hopes that the statute of limitations will run out on their crimes.

the government says it’s still struggling to stop the payments

*ahem* Let's think this through (obviously not a employment qualification at the SS payment center), multiple-choice style.

1. Remove the ink cartridge.
2. Shut off the printer.
3. Delete the scheduled payment from the A/P schedule.
4. Initiate the same standardized method that is used when someone passes on - posthaste.

There's no incorrect answer, any government lackey can get a passing grade.

Yep, but that’s the problem, they’ve been getting passing grades way too long.

The problem I’ve run into is they want your SS number and your personal information when you turn someone in. It’s more about the good citizen rather than stopping the corruption.

I know someone who just ran a 5K. Really? Can’t work because of bad knees and has to carry a cane to the doctor because they’re in such bad shape. Sure, but running a marathon is no problem. Heck, I do good to walk to the mailbox. But I can’t report SSI abuse without giving all my personal info. Who’s being abused here?

Of course. Why would anyone expect any other outcome? This is the unaccountable .gov we are talking about.

It is not their money. They have no skin in the game. Why should they worry; they won’t get fired.

If you ever watch Daytime TV, the Ads for Lawyers pushing SS Disability are over the place.

They show People who “got their check” and I have yet to see one in a Wheelchair or missing Limbs.

Most of the Claims made nowadays are Psychological.

When Welfare Reform passed back in the 90’s, SS Disability Claims started going up. Coincidence???? LOL

Well, a corrupt President has topped them all.

2000 people receiving fraudulent Social Security Disability constitutes massive fraud?

Thats nothing

President Obama instructed that able bodied unemployed workers who exhausted their already extended 99 weeks of unemployment insurance be immediately fraudulently classified as fully disabled and fraudulently enrolled directly into Social Security Long Term Disability to receive social security disability benefits instead of unemployment insurance

The Obama Administration has fraudulently enrolled almost 7 MILLION able bodied, out of work unemployed Americans into Social Security disability after their 99 weeks of unemployment ran out and they are still on disability

How did Obama get away with this.

Well, it turns out that Social Security Disability has a Trust Fund in a lock box just like Al Gores famous Social Security Trust Fund lock box.

Well, President Obama jimmied the lock on the Social Security Disability Trust Fund lock box and looted the Disability trust fund to give money intended for disabled and handicapped Americans to unemployed workers still unable to find a job after 99 weeks of unemployment insurance.

Without Obama’s raid on our SS disability trust fund we would have around 7 million Americans standing in soup lines longer than any we ever saw in the Great Depression

After 7 years , the SS Disability trust fund has just about been depleted as the unemployed increased the number receiving disability by a factor of 2 from around 6 million in 2008 to about 12.5 million today

Thanks to the Obama Administration, the Social Security Disability Trust Fund is now essentially Bankrupt

...the government says it’s still struggling to stop the payments.
And how long would the gov't "struggle" to stop it if there weren't partisan politics, kickbacks, bribes, money laundering, and other chicanery involved?

Back when Michigan's gov't got rid of G.A. (General Assistance) some of the social workers (state employees, every one) came to a similar conclusion -- let's push the mostly male former GA population onto the SSI machinery. One must also remember, President Reagan campaigned on many things, one of which was the ending of unfunded mandates. The thinking that, hey, we should remove these leeches from the state nipple and put them onto the federal nipple, was an idea that probably arose all over the country at pretty much the same time. This isn't on President Reagan, it's just an example of unintended consequences, and/or partisan party-line backlash.

Little thought goes into public policy.

Looking at the output of our ‘public servants’ we can conclude they’re massively overpaid. You gave one more example Civ - among millions of examples out there.
