Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer predicted that the Republican Party would most certainly collapse if Donald Trump is denied a presidential nomination at the convention in July.
In his latest column for the Washington Post, Krauthammer said if Trump does not lock up the nomination before the convention he has the most delegates but needs a majority it is possible the party will coalesce around an alternative and the billionaire's supporters will walk away, leaving the party in shambles.
"And if Trump loses out, a split is guaranteed," wrote Krauthammer. "In Trump's mind, he is a winner. Always. If he loses, it can only be because he was cheated. He constantly contends that he's being treated unfairly. He is certain to declare any convention process that leaves him without the nomination irredeemably unfair. No need to go third party. A simple walkout with perhaps a thousand followers behind will doom the party in November."
Trump has insisted that if he has the most delegates, even if it's less than half of those needed to win the nomination, he should be granted the nomination. But party rules allow delegates at a brokered convention to re-vote to elect a candidate who they believe to be most likely to beat the Democratic nominee in a general election.

“Cruz has NO chance of beating her. None. ZERO.
The guy has less charisma than Richard Nixon and has absolutely NO appeal to anyone except the far right (and I cant even imagine what THEY see in him). He has no cross-over appeal whatsoever. I dont even see how thats While Id hate to see Hillary win (obviously), I cant convince myself that MY vote would make the slightest difference since I believe that theres NO chance that, even with it, Cruz would ever beat her.arguable.”
Add to your post that if Cruz were to beat Hillary in the general election the Democrats WILL contest his eligibility. Cruz is NOT a Natural Born Citizen. No Canadian born son of a Cuban is a US NBC. Deal with it. Cruz will be found to be ineligible and the election will go to Hillary.
May as well vote directly for Hillary as to vote for Cruz!
‘Course it will solve this nonsense about having only 1 US citizen parent to be a NBC. The only upside...No more Obamas, no more Cruz’s! But.....Hello Hillary. (First US President to be hung for Treason.)
to parachute in a party unicorn who never entered the race in the first place would be a radical affront to the democratic spirit of the contemporary nominating process.
A parachute maneuver might be legal, but it would be perceived as illegitimate and, coming amid the most intense anti-establishment sentiment in memory, imprudent to the point of suicide.
Absolutely correct. Krauthammer gets it, and articulates it better than anyone to date.
Easy. Kasich has had barely any mud thrown at him at all. The full force of the media machine backing Hillary plus Democrat lies will sink Kasich faster than the Lusitania.
“I am writing in trump in November if hes not the nominee. I vote principles.”
Count me in too!
It’s your vote. I get one. Everyone else gets one.
“And I add: the voters. You mess up the convention and steal it from the candidate with easily the most assigned delegates on the first ballot, the voters wont show up after seeing such travesty.”
Actually, you might see a number of kamikaze voters...
Thanks for pointing that out. I’m reading this and thinking how can he get it so wrong? He’s right but for the wrong reasons.
Oh how cozy it must be for the betters among us to toy with the little people, so carefree, so uneffected.
I want the floor to shake beneath them, to be awoken from their towers of bs and deal with what they have created.
“...Trump voters vs the Cruz voters...”
At the end of the day, either one of them rankles the RINO establishment.
I’m good with that.
He has been so far, which is why he’s way ahead of Cruz.
Chuck is right for once.
A contested convention will make it almost impossible to beat Hillary. Ted Cruz has never been a great candidate, but if he won the majority straight up at least the party could unite around him. If the perception is that he used lawyer tricks to steal the nomination the party will shatter. Even Krauthammer admits it. How can anyone deny it?
I'll vote for Ted if he's nominated, same way I voted for Mitt. But he'll lose.
What a mealy mouthed CYA answer! I'd vote for Jeb to stop Hillary. A vote for anyone other than the GOP nominee is a vote for Hillary. So, will you vote for Trump against Hillary or not?
The problem is that the Cruz voters have joined with the Establishment.
Yes, well stop trying to steal the nomination!
Obama is going public with his TDS. Cruzaders have some good company.
You don't remain in the race just to stop the front runner from getting the number so you can try to win the nomination at the convention.
That is why what Cruz is doing is so unethical.
If they were neck and neck in the race that would be a different issue and a convention fight would be legitimate.
I will vote for the person walking into the convention with the most delegates. That will either be Trump or Cruz. If Cruz is mathematically eliminated and the nomination does not go to Trump I will walk.
“Yes, well stop trying to steal the nomination!”
I realize that Trump is the greatest business man and the greatest deal maker since the dawn of recorded history. I also might agree with Trump that the GOP elite is incompetent. Doesn’t that make you pause to consider how this great businessman, this great negotiator of deals, can be so easily outmaneuvered by the incompetent GOP elite? Just how good a deal can this great businessman make with Japan, China, Mexico, and Putin if the incompetent GOP elite are “stealing the nomination” from him?
You really only have two choices. Either Trump isn’t as great as he says he is or the GOP elite aren’t “stealing the election”.
So, both Cruz and Kasich are not following the spirit of primaries, but are simply using spoiling tactics to bring the nomination back to the convention, thereby circumventing the will of the voters.
