Colorado Loss Reveals Chaotic, Overwhelmed Trump Campaign
NBC News ^ | 4/8/16 | Benjy Sarlin

Colorado is not going well for Donald Trump.

After a shake-up at the top this week in which Trump empowered Paul Manafort to manage the campaign's troubled delegate operation, Sen. Ted Cruz swept a third straight Congressional District convention Thursday night. All three delegates selected were listed on a slate put forward by the Cruz campaign.

Trump aides concede that Colorado is not a promising state, but the level of disorganization at Thursday's event suggested problems that ran deeper than the top-line results.

Addressing the audience, Trump's new Colorado state director Patrick Davis told supporters to vote for the three pro-Trump delegate candidates on a glossy brochure the campaign distributed.

"Look for them on the back when you vote Donald Trump!" Davis said. "He's going to make America great again!"

There was only one problem: Two of the three names weren't listed on the ballot.

-snip-

After some digging, Davis returned with a solution to the mystery of the missing delegates. One of the delegates had failed to pay the necessary fee to get on the ballot. He assumed the other was left off for similar reasons.

-snip-

To be fair to Davis, who is a veteran operative in the state, he didn't have much time to get the campaign up to speed. He only joined Tuesday, right as a Trump aide assigned to the state, James Baker, was let go by the campaign.

-snip-

"If we get a delegate number higher than zero it will be a success," Alan Cobb, a Trump adviser focused on delegate strategy, told NBC News. "It's just not a good state for us."

Another Cruz win where the little people don’t get to vote. Go Cruz!

Trump had no chance of winning these delegates. Cruz has won two states is a row. Both of those states we Cruz friendly, but he still remains woefully behind in the delegate count.

The primary is about to swing towards Trump territory. You will see a momentum swing as Trump will win many states in rapid succession.

It would make sense that a campaign reorganize to ready themselves for the big push through favorable territory.

Paul Manafort said on CNN this morning that Trump will have 1237 delegates on the first ballot, guaranteed. Methinks NBC is spiking the ball prematurely.

“Another Cruz win where the little people don’t get to vote. Go Cruz!”

Exactly. What in the hell is going on in Colorado? We see a congressional district a week voting. Sounds like a whole lot of shenanigans going on if you ask me.

Another Cruz win where people actually care about electing a conservative.

It is a cluster here in CO.

They had some sort of caucus back in early March and then they cancelled some other primary votes. All very weird.

I didn’t get to vote in anything yet...

"The people aren’t voting you idiot!"

I'm pretty sure those Colorado Republicans are people. Watch the name calling.

The actual people are not voting. It’s the elected establishment who voted for pot don’t forget. I guess Ted is for pot smoking.

“The people” voted for Obama twice. I wouldn’t get too worked up about the glories of popular votes.

And we wonder why this country is so messed up. We have not had control of this country for a long, long time. It has been smoke and mirrors.
