I was surfing FR this afternoon and suddenly was unable to access any page on FR and the error stated the server could not be found.
I located the IP address, 209.157.64.200, of the server and then added an entry into my PC's host file and I can now see FR again.
I still do not see a DNS entry for FR, and that is interesting.
Glad it is up again. I tried everything mentioned, just could not login. I guess the polls closing did the trick. Thanks Cruz.
FINALLY working on PC again, its weird not being able to go on this site all day just glad its up and running again I havent checked my phone yet

It sounds like Free Republic site was fine. It sounds like Jim’s ISP screwed up the DNS name server.
I think you nailed it.
Geez, after I posted, it is back after two days. Weird. I was afraid to mess with my computer settings.
Wow..YES. You are right, and I thank you!
Actually, you can leave those numbers as they are, because those are provided by Open DNS; they are a good company.
DNS means 'Domain Name Server'; several companies provide services to translate the numerical addresses of the internet (i.e. 209.157.64.200 - FR's numerical address) to words and back.
Your ISP provides this service by providing DNS services. Google provides DNS services, but they track your movements, so don't use them.
I believe that the problem we experienced stemmed from a change that FR made to its DNS record (the place where the DNS services record as 'FR'). This change, and maybe an error in the paperwork, resulted in FR being 'not found'. OpenDNS was able to find FR, and will continue to do so.
Here's OpenDNS's website, as I say they are good people.

Yes, back to normal!
Thanks to Jim and all his hard work
Yay! It’s back!
I was fine this morning - got home from work - poof - gone.
Thank goodness I still had threads open, could read the messages about the numerical address for FR and watched posts.
Just refreshed, and it’s refreshed.
Refreshing!
It’s back! Whew. I was able to get in on my phone for awhile, but then that went down as well. Now, to catch up!
Thankfully it’s back up, as I don’t even know what a search engine is, let alone how to get into it!
couldn’t access it the other day via samsung galaxy just FYI, not sure if the info helps.... it routed me to my mobile service provider page.
Let me be the first to say Bush”s Fault!
Yep... back up. I even tried one of the ‘fixes’ to modify the “hosts” file. Didn’t work. But now everything is back up, which is good, as I want to surf FR as I watch Wisconsin returns.
Just got home and checked on my connection..and it’s working!!! Back to complaining about the election :)
"Amazon Route 53 is a highly available and scalable cloud Domain Name System (DNS) web service"
Glad it worked for you... It works for anyone with Brighthouse in Florida... maybe more...

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :
If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet its not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.
Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.
Thanks!! :)
