Republicans, already girding for their most tumultuous convention in decades, now have another fight brewing: a divisive battle over gay marriage on the partys official national platform.
Its an issue that drives intense passion, and one that splits the mainstream and evangelical wings of the GOP. With the convention less than four months away, both sides are mobilizing in anticipation of a bitter clash over whether the party should embrace a more moderate approach to gay nuptials, in keeping with a public that is more open to it, or maintain the hard line the partys base demands.
Some of the partys biggest financiers, attempting to transform the GOPs approach, have been helping to bankroll the American Unity Fund, a group that has launched a well-organized, behind-the-scenes effort to lobby convention delegates who will draw up the platform. It is asking them to adopt language that would accommodate same sex marriage.
The organization, which has offices in Washington, D.C., and a growing army of volunteers spread out across the country, has the backing of billionaire investors Paul Singer, Dan Loeb, Seth Klarman and Cliff Asness, who have been outspoken in calling for the GOP to moderate its rigid stance on social issues.

Sounds like they’re getting ready to light the fuse that blows up the GOP for good.
This shouldn’t be a tough platform issue for a national convention. The party’s position should be that this is an issue that should be left to the states, not the courts.
Any repub who wants to include homos should just be honest with themselves and join the RAT party.
We can only hope. I’ll supply the match.
I guess the GOPe is looking for additional 1% of voters.
And the GOP was aghast over Trumps answer to a hypothetical question on abortion. Good luck with this.
The national platform ALWAYS reflects the local level platform. By the time some agitators try to muscle their way into the platform discussion at the national level it is way too late for the pro-marriage crowd to advance their position.
That is the way it works.
So, this Politico article is a lot of crap.
I can live with that....and think that should be the standing of the GOP.
If they aren’t going to continue to be against it then why mention it in the party platform at all?
Reminds me of the 3 time vote at the DNC convention last time around where the voice vote clearly voted down including God in the scope and then the DNC Elite put it in anyway knowing what the impact could be.
I’ll supply blow torches....
Karl Rove.
The King of gay marriage.
Doesn’t he have anything constructive and useful to contribute to society?
It won’t stay confined.
Article IV, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, known as the “Full Faith and Credit Clause”, addresses the duties that states within the United States have to respect the “public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state.”.
Because the GOP establishment is promoting it wants to instruct the peasants on what they will be expected to accept.
Neocons have been supporting it for years. Socially they can be counted on to ally with the Left.
Big businesses are on board with gay marriage and punish any objections to it. This is the donor class from Sea Island.
Tough choice:
1) Piss off my base,
or
2) Attempt to pander to a group of voters that will never support me anyway.
Controversial? What is so controversial about legitimate marriage? The fact is that we reside in Bizarro World. We are told that non reproductive sex acts should be codified and protected in law because people are ‘born that way’ and can not change. However, a person who is born a particular gender is free to change that gender and we all must respect the fact that somehow people can change their actual sex.
