Donald Trump took 5 different positions on abortion in 3 days (video documentation)
Washington Post ^ | 4/3/2016 | Philip Bump

You can see the exact moment last week that Donald Trump made up his mind on whether women would face criminal punishment once he signed new restrictions into law. He is at a town hall with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, and, after Matthews badgers him for a while, he finally answers the question.

“The answer is ... that,” Trump says, eyes looking to the side in thought, “there has to be some form of punishment.” He punctuates “has” with a hand gesture. Done. Final.

But as it turns out — and as it has turned out repeatedly over the course of his life — that was not, in fact, Trump’s final position on the subject. This past week alone, he has held multiple contradicting positions, including that one. So we figured that a timeline was in order, so that you could see the date and time and know, concretely, what Trump’s abortion position was at that moment.

Though he might deny it.

April 1989

Trump co-sponsored a dinner at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan (which he then owned) honoring Robin Chandler Duke, a former president of NARAL. He chose not to attend, the New York Times reported, after his family was threatened by anti-abortion activists.

Oct. 24, 1999

Ten years later, Trump appeared on NBC in an interview with Tim Russert.

Asked about abortion, he’s clear.

“I’m very pro-choice,” Trump says. “I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it. I hate everything it stands for. I cringe when I listen to people debating the subject. But you still — I just believe in choice.”

Russert clarifies his original point: Would you ban partial-birth abortion? “No,” Trump replies...

Cruz is a poseur - he reinvents himself 24/7 with the constant backbeat of his father - lying Ted sticks for a reason.

Sorry, but I’ve been around more than five minutes.

Trump is the ONLY candidate who is opposed to the invasion and destruction of the U.S., which was the goal of Ted Kennedy with his 1965 Immigration Act.

Um... do a little more studying about Narcissistic Personality Disorder. People with NPD are rarely successful, precisely because they are so consumed with their own sense of greatness that they have utterly no sense of empathy.

Without a sense of empathy, one cannot succeed in business. One succeeds by understanding that you don’t get ahead by trampling other people, but by making mutually acceptable deals. How do you negotiate if you have no empathy—if you cannot tell when the other person is about to walk away, or is becoming genuinely interested in a solution?

You cannot claim that Trump is not successful, or that he has not already demonstrated the executive skills that the office of the president desperately needs. All you can do is get all emotional over the fact that a non-establishment type might come in and upset the status-quo.

Trump appears to have core beliefs, but they have changed over the course of several years. Most of us were okay with Reagan's change. Why is Trump changing any different?

A person of principle, who has a core morality, may certainly change his opinion when he learns new information. Being able to do so is a sign of maturity.

I can also accept the fact that Trump has become more educated about the topic of abortion over the years, and changed his opinion to better align with his core sense of morality.

He’d have to get his nominations past our representatives so they’re as important as the presidency. I agree, the abortion thing is just a distraction at this point. I would think bringing back the draft would be easier. Abortion, like it or not is here to stay. The reaction of people just by the mere mention of it sets women in a tizzy. Can you imagine if it was ever overturned? There’d be riots like no other. It’s going to be fun just to see Obamacare overturned at this point. The longer it stays around the harder it is to turn off.

Shut up you DU member!!

Support the 1st Amendment much? ...support debate on FR?

You can put your fingers in your ears, hold your breath and stomp your feet, but it won't change the fact Donald Trump is a FRAUD.

I know, you want me to Shut Up too.

...just makes me LOL.

Reagan's change occurred over the course of a decade, had a clear cause, and his positions were clear and consistent for over a decade before he ran for President.

The same is not true of Trump. The original poster was right: Trump has no core conservative beliefs. He will "change" again, and what he will change into you can't predict, because it will depend totally on Donald Trump's idea of what gets Donald Trump ahead.

Reagan changed his belief over a period of years and maintained a Conservative position for 30 years. Trump can't keep the same position for 30 weeks.

"Do you think Cruz is supported by the GOPe, ie the globalists? Is this acceptable to you?"

In order to win a presidential election, a candidate has to get the support of a bit more than half the electorate. Of course that must include the GOPe. I go by the core beliefs of the candidate, not the list of his supporters. My Senator, Cruz is a principled conservative based on his kept promises made during his Senatorial campaign.

“the manic pro-abortion “Catholic””

It was a beautiful thing watching Trump nail Mathews to the wall on his religion. That’s why I like Trump; he’s the only candidate who is willing to put these press critters in their place.

Of course he will under-deliver.

But he’s the ONLY candidate who is even promising to stop the invasion. Every other candidate has a pro-invasion history.

“My Senator, Cruz is a principled conservative based on his kept promises made during his Senatorial campaign.”

Your Senator starting running for President the day after he won his seat. In Florida we call that ...Marco Rubio
