(NBC) - Donald Trump says he regrets retweeting an unflattering photo of the wife of rival Ted Cruz, a rare move for the Republican front-runner more known for his boasts than backtracking.
"Yeah, it was a mistake," Trump told New York Times.
"If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have sent it."
The retweet set off a war of words between the two candidates, and gave fresh fuel to Democratic candidates and other critics who marveled at a Republican presidential race that had descended into a fight over the candidates' wives.
Trump retweeted the photo compilation showing an unflattering picture of Heidi Cruz and his own wife, Melania, after he accused Cruz of being behind or at least knowing about an ad that featured an old picture of Melania Trump posing nude for GQ magazine.
Cruz has denied any involvement in the ad, which was shared online. Cruz scolded Trump after the retweet, admonishing the businessman: "Donald, real men don't attack women."

The real focus by the American voters and certainly the fine people of Wisconsin is the truth of the assertion in published accounts that Ted Cruz lied to his wife and had had 8 recent affairs. 3 of the women have been named and I have not heard a single denial from any of them. or him. Amanda’s response on TV was “ Talk to my Lawyer? ( are you kidding me? )Cruz responds “The reporting is “Gargage”and “Sleeze”. I agree that lying to your wife and bedding 8 adulterous women is “garbage and Sleaze”, don’t you?
Now,I’m hearing rumor that the hotel video was bought up by a Ted Cruz billionaire supporter ( Owner of Breitbart) and is being hidden from the public. If we have a video that clearly shows Cruz and his favorite bimbo going into the same hotel and emerging an hour later, always on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I think we have something, don’t you?
Any way , I am not near as interested in an old professional modeling photo of Mrs Trump as I am of Cruz himself.

Anyone could now form a political organization tacitly in support of Ted Cruz, put out any extreme message---assertions consequently damaging to his campaign, yet people would accept this as being political speech concocted to allow plausible deniability for Cruz.
The precedent has now been set that other voices may speak for Cruz's benefit; yet, he will disavow, wink wink, any connection to his campaign. If a message appeared, seemingly supportive of the campaign; yet, so vitriolic and over the line as to drive away supporters, how would he recover the initiative? Who would now accept his dissent without thinking, wink wink.

come on you believe Cruz had nothing to do with that ad just because he said so? Can you acknowledge he has already lied in this campaign? What would prevent him from doing it again? Follow the money. Some surrogate of Cruz, was responsible for the ad.
You need to educate yourself....PACs by law cannot coordinate with candidates.....this particular pact is not even a Cruz Pac....it’s a stop Trump Pac!!!

The fact the ad specifically called on voters to support Ted Cruz required much more than that from an honest candidate.
Cruz had a responsibility to disavow both Liz Mair and the PAC she runs and he failed to do that.
That’s a hell of a speech. Impressive.
