Electoral Map Is a Reality Check to Donald Trump’s Bid By JONATHAN MARTIN and NATE COHN APRIL 2, 2016

Donald J. Trump’s presidential candidacy has stunned the Republican Party. But if he survives a late revolt by his rivals and other leaders to become the party’s standard-bearer in the general election, the electoral map now coming into view is positively forbidding.

In recent head-to-head polls with one Democrat whom Mr. Trump may face in the fall, Hillary Clinton, he trails in every key state, including Florida and Ohio, despite her soaring unpopularity ratings with swing voters.

In Democratic-leaning states across the Rust Belt, which Mr. Trump has vowed to return to the Republican column for the first time in nearly 30 years, his deficit is even worse: Mrs. Clinton leads him by double digits in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Trump is so negatively viewed, polls suggest, that he could turn otherwise safe Republican states, usually political afterthoughts because of their strong conservative tilt, into tight contests. In Utah, his deep unpopularity with Mormon voters suggests that a state that has gone Republican every election for a half-century could wind up in play. Republicans there pointed to a much-discussed Deseret News poll last month, showing Mrs. Clinton with a narrow lead over Mr. Trump, to argue that the state would be difficult for him.

In the movie “Bridge Over The River Kwai,” Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson played by Sir Alec Guinness upon seeing the cables to blow up the bridge during low tide, realizes the impending disaster and exclaims “Oh God, What Have I Done”! as he falls on the plunger.

I think that's a little off. He found the cables, but was nowhere near the plunger. He was about to break the cables to save the bridge, when he said "What am I doing?" or to that effect, and as he hesitated he was shot, as ordered by the spy guy, what's his name.

I'm sure of it!

( Ah yes, Jack Hawkins! )

... also, it's THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI

... ah yes, I remember it well!

I meant Cruz and Trump would destroy Clinton... regardless of all these polls.

Of course all of those polls have been so accurate for the past 2 years. This time they are to be believed.

Pray America wakes

That's what is so ridiculous. They take all of these polls...with specific (sometimes potential) voters...and say Trump can't win. It's all the RNC/GOP/FoxNews hogwash. Trump has beat Cruz time after time.

What's hilarious is when Cruz stumps and says Trump can't beat Clinton (because polls say so)...and yet Cruz can't beat Trump.

Hannity has it right. It is ALL about beating Hillary. If we don't win this election, we are doomed.

I'm horrified by what the RNC is doing with the delegate count. I would never have believed this would happen in the United States of America. It is shameful.

Sorry for the rant. I'm just disgusted at the moment.

“If Cruz can’t beat Trump in the Primary, how can he beat Hillary in the General?”

If Trump doesn’t get to 1,237 then Trump hasn’t beaten anyone.

Good point. That's the thing about Cruz. He never has anything in his speeches....other than dissing Trump. Trump talks about economy, jobs, illegal immigration, taxes, China, Japan, ISIS. He interacts with the crowd and is funny.

I pray Trump can win this thing.

Trump supporters don’t care. They simply make it up as they go. By election day, they will have convinced themselves that Trump will win all fifty states.

IMO none of it matters.......only how the votes are counted...maters....

The only way we get a decent potus...is if the numbers are undeniable...

I am pessimistic

The question in my mind is how his statement about punishing women who have abortions have hurt his numbers. Even those generally opposed to abortion probably did a double take, particularly women.

They said Carter was 15 point ahead of Reagan. It is pure propaganda.

“population of general election voters”

This is the exact reason Cruz will not win a general election. For starters his favorables/unfavorables are just as bad as Trump’s. But Cruz had zero crossover appeal. Cruz will not win Florida, North Carolina, or Virginia; these are all swing states now and trending blue, and without all three, he stands no chance at all; there is simply no mathematical way for him to win.

Ctuz’s bible thumping days will be over.

Don’t believe the polls ... cause Reagan beat Carter back in 1980, ya know ... and Romney sat out the last month in 2012, because he believed that Republicans were all working during the day when the pollsters called, ya know ...

Heh. From Wikipedia,

"Recognizing the dying Shears, Nicholson exclaims, "What have I done?" Warden fires his mortar, mortally wounding Nicholson. The dazed colonel stumbles towards the detonator and collapses on the plunger, just in time to blow up the bridge and send the train hurtling into the river below."

I guess I'd better watch it again!
