FRESNO, Calif. (AP) A wrong-way driver leading authorities on a high-speed chase crashed through a gate and into a fighter jet at a central California naval base, killing himself and a passenger, authorities said Thursday.
The Navy base does not appear to be an intended target, and the man and woman who died were not affiliated with the military, said Capt. Monty Ashliman, commander at Naval Air Station Lemoore. He said authorities are investigating what started the chase and how the driver broke through the secured gate.

The driver eventually left State Route 198, smashed through a gate at the base and hit the FA-18E Super Hornet parked about 7 miles inside the base, Ashliman said.

The United States Government is self insured, that gonna be a helluva bill down at the body shop.
If there's an estate to bill, it will be billed. Other than that, yup.
More taxpayer money down the drain, and a fighter damaged. Obama is smiling.
Great, a terrorist only needs an SUV to penetrate a secure military base.
Obviously we need More and Stricter SUV Control.
Probably an illegal alien with no insurance.
The car hit the horizontal stabilizer. I’m thinking they were decapitated?
I’m just guessing, but I suspect this was the “fighter-on-a-stick” at the front gate. It will cost some to fix the exhibit but it’s already a derelict airplane, not an operational jet.
Hahahahahahaaaaa! Did you read the blurb?

Where is the obligatory “this was not a terrorist incident”
statement?
It is interesting that he got SEVEN FREAKING MILES inside the gate and only stopped when he collided with the Hornet.
What kind of security do they have for a breach like that? Not too much from the looks of it. They were lucky - this time.
Now, next time, pack that puppy with high explosives and head for the flight line.
They should have assumed room temperature within 100 yards of the gate.
Some idiot did that at an air base a few years ago and crashed and died in the base. A few weeks later it was tried again. A few .50 cal. Rounds later the problem was resolved.
Seven miles inside the base? Where was the base security? Shore patrol? The base CO is gonna chew some a$$ you betcha!
Air cop has some splanin to do
Common Sense SUV laws would have prevented this...
Reminds me.....I watch a Thai guard at the front gate shoot a guy in the leg with a .45 ...before the firecracker he threw went off.
Thai guard s don’t mess around
Hope he had good insurance. Those F-18s are pricey.
Should have been dead the minute they crossed the “sacred red line” on the flight line. You do not cross the red line. Never ever. Air Force brat here.
