I could raise enough chickens, rabbits and potatoes to feed quite a crew....easy stuff.
They’d eat the peeps and the seed potatoes. Then the rabbits.
If the gov. finds out about our hypothetical farmer all he worked for will be confiscated for the good of the state. If he hides it from the state he will be killed when one of his neighbors turns him in.

Most of the land is poor, it’s cold and any food you produce has to be given to the government for distribution. If there is not enough food for the military (and party elite), civilians get NONE.
Anyone found hoarding is executed on the spot. Including any family members.
Anyone reporting hoarders is rewarded with food.
