I can trust Cruz to stand his ground, and stay true to [his] conservative values.

Conservative values do not include promulgating smears of bigotry on a fellow candidate who is known to not be bigoted. Playing the race card is not a conservative value.

Indeed, staying true to conservative and Christian values would imply correcting the record and repudiating such calumny when it is being used essentially to bear false witness.

That was one of my first red flags with Cruz: he disingenuously went right along with the Media/Left/GOPe demonization of Donald Trump that he knew was totally false and preposterous.

All I can say is, in the same position and knowing the same facts, I could not in good conscience parrot such Establishment propaganda in an effort to knowingly and falsely smear another candidate.

And the above case, as we all know, is not the only case where ethical lapses have occurred in the Cruz campaign.

Another red flag for Cruz with me was the aftermath of the canceled Trump rally. We all know how that went: he gave a passing rebuke to the criminal mob of thugs that got violent and caused a rally to be canceled, but he then deflected blame onto the frontrunner, who was the victim in the incident, as if Donald Trump somehow "invited" this criminal attack due to the "atmosphere" he created. It was a weak statement that showed no leadership or party solidarity (or even party loyalty), and it exposed Ted Cruz as a naked opportunist.

That's when Ted really began to lose me.

Now we all know that Donald Trump is no Saint, but conservative and Christian values do include what I noted above, and Ted Cruz totally betrayed those values and allowed himself to become an agent of the GOPe's/Media/Left's slanted attacks against Donald Trump. I honestly don't think, for instance, that Donald Trump would reciprocally play the race card on Ted Cruz if he knew it wasn't true.

Supporters of both sides can argue all thy want about which candidate is being more mean more often, more honest, more dishonest, etc., but the bottom line is that Ted Cruz has abandoned some core conservative values, specifically in the realm of ethics. And that's an important realm.

It seems to me like Ted Cruz has the attitude that the ends justify the means, and I think he will discover that is not the case.

Donald Trump, warts and all, appears to me by far to be the better choice as Chief Executive (that's President for those of you in Rio Linda):

Anybody who can't see the potential here is missing out on something distinctly American, IMHO.

Don't forget, our Founders envisioned a government where productive citizens left private life, served in government for relatively short periods of time, and then returned to their real jobs, so to speak, after doing their duty in government.

A President does not have to meet the qualifying criteria of any gatekeeper or group of gatekeepers, whether formal or informal.

The only true gatekeepers of the American Presidency are the American People themselves, bound only by the requirements set forth in the Constitution.

Now that's not always a good thing, but it can be, and in general, it's certainly a step above a letting a bunch of elite and corrupt "kingmakers" deciding who our nominee (and potential President) will be.

Donald Trump can do this. Those who dismiss him are wrong. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

And so could Ted Cruz do the job. But he's not the best man for it and he won't arrive at the convention with a majority of delegates...

That will destroy the party because they’ve been ignoring us, ignoring the conservative principles we want, and taking our votes for granted. This will be the last straw.

But exactly who is "us", "we" and "our"? I don't believe Trump voters are that monolithic.

My point is that I don't believe that all, or even most, voters who have voted for Trump in the primary are going to never vote for another Republican again if he doesn't win the nomination. I'm sure some of them feel that way. I'm just not sure it is a large enough number to actually destroy the party.

Look, I stated my points, and you did yours.

I find that I have been sucked into a debate that I did not intend for this to be.

So I’ll back off and say have a good day.

Are you a GOP shrill?

Everything the party has done for the last 20 years has been to ignore its base and therefore, destroy itself.

Are you a GOP shrill?

Never been a party official, elected to any political office, or a major contributor. Just a guy.

Just because I don't let my emotions affect my analysis doesn't make me a "shill". But I recognize that it is easy to turn into villains everyone who disagrees with you.

The party establishment is not evil. They do not always place the same priority on things that every voter does, though. The biggest difference I've seen is that the party establishment is much less willing to take controversial stands on issue unless they think they will win. They avoid trying to make "statements" like the plague.

So the way it plays out is that the "GOP-E"/party moderates won't go out on a limb when the opposing party controls the White House or Congress. Their strategy, right or wrong, is to try to do what they see as necessary to regain a majority, with a Republican President. That often involves not fighting against Democrats as hard as they probably should.

The positive side, though, is that if you get a Republican President, the GOP-E/moderates generally will line up behind him and support his agenda, even on some tougher votes.

The GOP-E is generally not the enemy. But they are a bad, fair weather ally. Still, that is better than an enemy.

Well said

amidst the emotional trauma, rational analysis not according to dogmatic doctrine isn’t welcome

the concept of observing and rationally reporting is lost on many here

It's depressing as hell.

The left has gotten this country where it is because they never take their eye off the ball. They think strategically, build coalitions, and stay together even when they aggravate the hell out of each other.

The disadvantage we as conservative have is that we are a fractious, independent-thinking lot not tolerant of what we see as stupidity. But the truth is that coalitions need stupid people too, and we need to build a majority coalition -- which will include some folks we don't like -- if we want to enact change.

You say you are not a GOP shrill, yet all you do is defend them.

Yes, they are the enemy because they pretend to be conservatives yet back liberal positions time after time.

They are worse than the democrats because they lie about their agenda. At least the democrats are honest about their objectives.

You are better off on some liberal site, not a conservative one like FR. Everyone here sees thru you.
