It depends on how he recovers, and how the electorate thats been pushing him recovers, said Caddell. Theres a Quinnipiac poll out this morning that shows him with 56% of the vote in New York. Hes never been higher than 30 in Wisconsin, but hes going back to his home territory. New Jersey is winner-take-all. California is a big campaign.
If Trump cant recover and get the delegates he needs, Caddell thought Senator Cruz would likely find himself discarded after the first ballot at the convention, his usefulness to the Party bosses at an end.
If they can stop Trump, then Cruz will pick up some more on the second ballot but I dont think theyre gonna nominate him, he explained. I think they will then move to nominate, to try to nominate an Establishment figure, someone who hasnt run. I think that will blow the Republican Party up.
Caddell said the GOP Establishment is terrified of Trump, and also opposed to Cruz, because they are worried about their arrangements being broken up, their power.
He said these Establishment politicians would absolutely rather lose the 2016 election to Hillary Clinton than win with Trump or Cruz. Conversely, the voters who have propelled Trump and Cruz to victory over a platoon of more Establishment-approved candidates are unlikely to reconcile themselves to an Establishment pick inserted at the Republican National Convention.

Will we stay home, or will we kill the GOPe once and for all?
Ive been posting this comment on every site I go to that uses Disqus. I mean it and I dont care who doesnt like it.
GOP hear me on this! Im voting for Donald Trump for President this November, as the R nominee or as a write in if I have to. If I have to do a write in vote because of dirty tricks at the convention, Ill do so, but then Im going to vote a straight Dem ticket on the rest of my ballot.
You might think Hillary will be easier for you to deal with than Donald Trump, but youll be singing a different tune when waves of Republicans are swept from office and the Democrats have super majorities in both houses of the next congress. Many Donald Trump supporters will not stay home on election day, well vote for him as a write in candidate and then vote FOR your Democrat opponents.
Millions of Americans who have been reliable Republican voters have concluded that the leadership of both parties has been operating in the interests of Big Money and Big Business to the detriment of the middle class and weve had enough. If you insist on ruining what we consider our last chance to save this country to keep your place at the trough, then lets get this party started.
The number of people that know what America used to be are dying off every day and the kids that think The Bern is the way to go are replacing them in ever increasing numbers.
Going to hell in a hurry with the Dems in charge is better than taking baby steps to get there. If were going anyway lets go while theres still enough of us that remember what it was like to live in a free country are still here to pick up the pieces.
This country cant go on like this forever and the sooner we get to fixing it the better the chances are that it will succeed.
Nicely said! Teddy will end up looking like Humphrey Bogart standing in the Paris train station waiting for Ingrid Bergman to show up.
He can then adapt Al Gore's post-USSC decision quip: "I'm Ted Crux, the former next Republican presidential nominee."
I’m supporting Cruz, but I agree with everything you said. Enough of these guys simply mining the system for their own personal benefit and then trying to cloak everything they do from the voters with Kabuki votes and such.
What does one call a member of Free Republic with a sign up date of 7-31-2000, makes their first post on 3-9-02, has their first page of posting history span almost 6 years, (3-9-02 to 1-3-08), second page of posting history spans from 1-3-08 to 2-1-2016, disappears from the forum from 1-3-12 then reappears and begins posting like a zealot for Ted Cruz on 12-19-15?
Iowa David, you have an 11 page posting history here and 9 of them are filled with pro-Cruz anti-Trump posts.
Looking through your posting history, I also noticed you really know how to pick the winners too. Rick Santorum, Alan Keyes and Fred Thompson.
Iowa David, Id call you an election year FReeper troll or a paid operative.
Cruz supporters have to deal with reality. Their candidate IS part of the establishment team. He's doing EXACTLY what the establishment wants him to. It is HILLARY's turn to be President. They owe her. She has all kinds of dirt on Dems and Pubbies.
The republicans want a weak, moderate GOP candidate. They are terrified of Trump because he will defeat Clinton. They will NOT allow Cruz to have the nomination and he's okay wit h that because he's already been bought off. At this point he's just doing what they want...helping Clinton get elected.
And I would also thank him for his great work on the Alan Keyes campaign in 1996. Iowa David got involved with the Keyes campaign when Pat Buchanan went to New Hampshire and talked about the big tent philosophy regarding abortion. Iowa David sacrificed a lot to ensure Keyes was a threat to Buchanan and forced Pat to back off that big tent abortion position.
I would realize that during the time that Iowa David was raising a family and very involved in his church as a youth leader.
But that is just me, what you think of me is really of no consequence.
“He says exactly what weve said for a month. All of this is true. This is why we need trump going in with 1237”
Why don’t the two of them shake hands so we can all shake hands and finish what was the original plan, wipe out the establishment and take the white hut from the rats.
Our infighting is how the establishment will win. That’s what they planned, executed and are monitoring closely.
The uniparty is OK with that. What they are not ok with is voting for Trump, anything else is fine with them.
bump
Pat Caddell is spot on. The GOPe will discard Cruz at the first opportunity.
After this election, there is no way anything but a democrat is ever again elected president. Without ballot verification and voter roll validation, the extra illegals who will be naturalized during a clinton2 administration will cement the demoncrat party power forever. Texas alone going down will assure that scenario.
Because Cruz has been bought off by the establishment. It's clear. He has establishment types running his campaign now. He's doing what they want. And they want Hillary. Trump is the threat. Hillary is not.
Those two, together or apart will lose worse than Romney or McCain.
You and many (not all) Trump supporters seem to believe that the nomination is already rightfully Trump’s because he has 39% of the voters’ votes cast thus far, vs. 29% for Cruz — and you believe the nomination can ONLY rightfully be Trump’s even if he goes into Cleveland with less than a majority of the delegates.
That’s just not what the rules say.
And no serious Cruz supporters or anyone else is suggesting that Cruz has any chance of getting an outright pre-convention majority, either. (Tip: Using snark like “Math is your friend” is not YOUR friend if you are trying to persuade the persuade-able. Especially when you don’t understand their argument in the first place.) That’s not the argument. The argument is, essentially, “Hold Trump to under a majority, and then work to get Cruz on top on later ballots.”
And there’s nothing against the pre-convention rules at play there. So many (not all) Trump supporters think that Cruz is somehow “cheating” to dare — to DARE! — to keep running hard to try to maximize his delegate count in hopes of denying Trump a pre-Cleveland majority.
Perhaps you can help me with an earnest question about any later-than-first balloting, under the current rules. (I realize that the rules can be changed at any time, but I think even the GOPe realizes that such changes will be viewed as treason by regular GOP voters.) Under “Rule 40,” a candidate’s name cannot be put up for nomination unless he has won a majority of delegates in 8 states or territories. My question is, does that Rule remain in effect after an unsuccessful first ballot? If so, then the second ballot is limited to Cruz or Trump, right? If NOT, or the rules are changed, can we be saddled with Mitt or whatever?
I agree.
And I would call him someone not very adept at picking winners.
The GOPe will discard Cruz at the first opportunity.
...while that is true, you need to understand that His Delegates will not... he picks his delegates. Count on it.
ymmv
I’m a Trump supporter who will vote for Cruz if he wins fair & square.
Kasich, Romney or Ryan? Forget it!!
Glad to hear. I will vote Trump if he’s nominated (barring some horrific new development, at least), because anyone in the Dem party with a realistic shot at the nomination will put SCOTUS into the left wing slot for 30 years. Trump may put up some Tony Kennedy types, but that’s still better than what we’d get from a Dem.
Good catch. There is a lot of that going on lately.
