With both ISM Manufacturing and Services employment indices collapsing, endless headlines of layoffs, Challenger-Grey noting Q1 as the worst since 2009, and NFIB small business hiring weak, it is no surprise that initial jobless claims is finally waking up. For the 3rd week in a row - the longest streak since July 2015. The last 3 weeks have seen a 9.1% surge in jobless claims - the biggest such rise since April 2014.

And finally, as Challenger-Grey notes,

Through the first quarter of 2016, employers announced 184,920 job cuts, up 31.8 percent from the 140,241 cuts tracked the first three months of 2015.

The first quarter saw 75.9 percent more job cuts than in the final quarter of 2015, when 105,079 job cuts were recorded.
US companies announced the most 1Q layoffs since 2009 as oil-related cuts continue to inflate numbers, according to data from Challenger Gray.

Citing John Challenger, MarketTalk adds that announcements "have increased significantly" in retail and computers, adding, "While it may be too early to sound the alarm bells, the upward trend outside of the energy sector is somewhat worrisome." Overall announced layoffs by Challenger Gray's count have been 185K this quarter, versus 140K a year earlier.

It's the worst start to a year since 2009, when in the wake of the financial crisis companies announced plans that 1Q to cut 562K jobs.

What do you mean it may be ‘too early to sound the alarm bells’?

Oh, I get it. A better time is when an ‘R’ occupies the White House.

I was in a Kmart store yesterday that had 1/3 of it’s light banks turned off to save money. Not a symptom of a robust economy.

Well KMarts are zombie stores.
I’m amazed any of them are still in operation.
The one in our neighborhood has about 5 people per shift total employees.

Here's another: In December, I stopped by a nearby Goodwill and was stunned to see how many people were there buying clothing and other items. Some were commenting that they were doing Christmas shopping. That doesn't exactly speak to a robust economy either. The happy talk is just that. This economy is nowhere near what it's ballyhooed to be.

It would seem that KMart isn't long for this world... It'd seem the merger with Sears is all that's keeping them going.

The amazing part is the one in our locale has been zombie-like for 5 or 6 years. I think their only lifeline is that there is a retirement home complex directly across the street and the folks can reach it via wheelchair, walker, etc.

I think turning alternate banks of lights off and on has been a common energy saving scheme for a while now in large buildings with overhead lighting.

It’s called bi-level, or dual-level, switching of light fixtures.

You can get some sort of tax break if you install it.

Where I live in Ocean County NJ the locale I live in is near the beach so there’s always good summers and bad as far as part time work, there’s plenty of Home Depots, Targets, etc but there are plenty of strip malls of all sizes and in the last 5-6 years like rotting teeth their closing up one after the other. A&P closed up, Kohls is closing stores, even the McDonald’s and Burger King’s around here are getting zombie like. The only real thing that keeps things going here is that Ocean Co., NJ has the largest number of senior citizens retirement communities, nursing homes and hospitals in NJ. Unless you’re an RN or CNA, the work is part time and there is full time for maintenance guys like me but they’re tough to find and I’ve been looking. The real unemployment figure is probably around 15 or 20%.

Would you be happier if interest rates went negative and you had to pay the bankers to hold your money?

I heard the ABC news, they said these numbers about jobless claims rising affirm how strong the economy is.
