More Seniors, Fearing Crime, Flock to Shooting Ranges

Gun dealers say personal safety is a priority for older people who want firearms training

By James R. Hagerty

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio—On a recent Monday at the Austintown Senior Center, activities included painting, bingo and shooting guns.

Around 9:45 a.m., a dozen people in their 60s and 70s bundled into a van and several cars and headed to the nearby American Range shooting gallery, whose lobby features a portrait of Clint Eastwood over the legend “Go ahead make your day.” Soon, they were blasting away at paper targets dangling in a dim, damp room with cinder-block walls.

Afterward, Phyllis Engler, a recently retired physical education teacher, was pleased with her debut. “I have arthritis in my shoulder so it was hard holding [the pistol] out, but I think with practice I’ll be fine,” said the 63-year-old. She planned to buy a pistol and apply for a concealed-carry permit. She had a message for criminals: “They better not mess with the women of Austintown.”

The National Rifle Association says 22,739 people over 65 took basic firearm training courses from NRA-certified instructors in 2015, four times the number five years earlier. An NRA spokesman said the growth in that age category was much faster than the overall rate but didn’t provide additional data.

Barf Alert quote from gun-grabber, professor:

Some say those buyers may also be misguided. David Hemenway, a professor of health policy at Harvard University, said “the evidence is pretty strong that [owning a gun] isn’t going to help you.” Having a gun at home increases the risks for suicide and accidental shootings, he said, and it is hard to shoot an intruder or assailant: “Your heart starts beating like crazy,” he said. “If they’re running at you, you have half a second or something.”

So what can worried seniors do? “Get a dog, get a good lock, get good neighbors, get a cellphone,” Prof. Hemenway said.

Everyone’s profiteering off of crime instead of solving the base problem of crime. That includes law enforcement, businesses, non-profits, politicians, everyone. Public hangings now. THAT is the way to begin to stop the crime.

Article is leftist.

"...Soon, they were blasting away at paper targets ...

Only leftists use the phrase "blasting away"; it's an emotional term. Any normal person is more focused on shot placement and breathing. It's a giveaway.

Why do those in the media hate freedom and personal safety?

Are you saying opening a shooting range to meet the needs of people wanting to practice is profiteering?

"...Everyone’s profiteering off of crime instead of solving the base problem of crime...."

That's Anarcho-Tyranny, and it is all part of the plan.

The elites do not want to solve the easily-fixed problems of our society. They want them to continue. They do not want to lower crime.

Crime is a tool to scare and control the masses.

Home invaders need to be shot. Seniors getting guns to protect themselves is a good thing.

I’m sick of leftist “professors” wanting to take guns from non-violent people and leave them in the hands of violent criminals.

“Why do those in the media hate freedom and personal safety? “

Because they believe they are exempt from it.

Local business owner was telling me about three HUD houses put on one of the residential streets in my area. A nice quiet area but I noticed recently that one nice little house has a sagging porch roof with a couch and junk outside. Yeah, that’s one of the HUD houses due to Obama’s policy of HUD house expansion into nice middle-class neighborhoods.

No, not at all. Those supplying all of the needs of people who need guns and know how to shoot them are not calling for much-needed public hangings for heinous crimes. Why?

And that is bad?

Investors Are Loading Up On Gun Stocks
Mar. 11, 2016 2:27 AM ET|
Includes: RGR, SWHC

While it’s impossible to separate out the sector’s social and political ramifications, investors in America’s gunmakers have clearly benefited from a surging demand for weapons.

Last week, Smith & Wesson Holding Corp (NASDAQ:SWHC) reported better-than-expected quarterly results, with sales rising 61% to year-over-year to $210.8 million and profit jumping to $31.4 million from $8.1 million a year ago.1

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company’s CEO, James Debney, told analysts on a conference call that the demand for firearms is a result of short-term influences of “potential impact of news events and the current political environment.”

Smith & Wesson said firearm net sales jumped 56.4% to $194.7 million in its latest quarter, up from a year earlier, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, peer Sturm Ruger & Company’s (NYSE:RGR) stock rose following its quarterly results that handily beat Wall Street expectations, according to a Reuters report.2

Related gun investments have similarly followed suit: The “Guns” segment of the Guns, Guards and Gates motif has risen 18% in the past month. The entire motif has gained 18.2% in that time, while the S&P 500 has increased 6.5%. Over the past 12 months, the motif has gained 3.4%; the S&P 500 is down 3.4%.

As Reuters pointed out, gun stocks have climbed steadily in recent years in part due to massacres like last December’s shooting in San Bernardino, California that have increased calls for gun control.

Nuther headline is that of the millions and millions of new gun purchases since O took office, millions of these new owners are democrats. The public at large just isn’t buying the tired old worn out anti-gun message anymore. Lib politicians haven’t realized this yet.

“Why do those in the media hate freedom and personal safety?”

It is an important question. A couple of books have been written about it, but it deserves the attention of a whole field of study.

Essentially, it is because “progressives” took over all media networks and journalism schools about five decades ago. They actively exclude conservatives and stop their careers. Only those who tow the party line are allowed to advance, and a very clear indicator of not towing the party line is any interest or sympathy toward the Second Amendment or gun ownership.

Agreeing that most citizens should be disarmed has become a litmus test of what it means to be a “reliable” party member in the media elite.

Thugs prey on helpless people, and they single out seniors for their social depredations. The only sure way to stop a thug is to be a bigger, better armed thug. Sorry, that’s the truth.

No, no, you’ve got it all wrong! There aren’t more new gun owners!

“More & more guns in fewer & fewer hands” is the liberal meme. “Gun owners tend to be OFWGs” is the other. This article only PROVES the ongoing dangerous trend!

President Obama has said, “America, turn in your guns and learn to trust Muslims”. Why won’t people LISTEN!!?

;^)
