Yes, I know they are technically different

My Mother was a McDuffie and she used to have a framed print of Clan McPhee tartan. It is officially Clan McPhee although they admit that McDuffie was the earlier spelling.

Their tartan is registered with the Lord Lyon and is an official tartan.

Once a "broken clan" after the last chieftain and his sons were murdered by a renegade member of Clan MacDonald (their traditional allies) Clan MacPhee (or MacDuffee) is again recognized with this badge and tartan. I'm from the side that made it Ireland to (as a Scottish friend put it) "avoid English rope".

Because of my heritage, I am eligible to wear several tartans. A situation I am very proud of, for being a commoner!
