It could have been worse, I suppose. The UN could have ruled that the Falklands belong to the Palestinians.

Henry II: The Vexin's mine.
Philip II: By what authority?
Henry II: It's got my troops all over it; that makes it mine.

The Argies would have a hell of lot more casualties trying to take the Falklands this time around.

So what! If Argentina wants to get the Falklands back, send in the Army...oh, they did that, and lost.

Is there anyplace in the world that there has NOT been a dispute over borders?

The last place I would want to see the problem solved is the UN.

Leaning Right : " Falkland Islands lie in Argentine waters, says UN commission "

Here lies the problem !
International sovereignty and borders is now determined by un-elected officials in an increasingly political climate ?
Last I knew , there were Inter-National sovereign borders that were protected and defined by international agreement.
Looks like China , Muslims , and the New World Order has taken over.
It might be time to tell the U.N. to go back to Brussels, as they have over-stayed their welcome here ..!
and lose their biggest financial fundraiser .., and the only one who pays their bills !

Of course, the UN has also elevated Saudi Arabia to the Human Rights commission, and declared Israel the greatest human rights violator in the world.

The story is not very informative, but it says the argument is based on claims about the continental shelf. That, of course, would work both ways. It sounds to me like a lot of the Argentine coastline is in Falklands/U.K. territorial waters.

Usually when two nations' claims overlap in a contested waterway or continental shelf situation, they split the difference and draw a line midway. Sounds like a reasonable solution here.

dealing a blow to the U.K.'s claims in the region.

It should be seen as a blow to the UN's legitimacy as a serious arbiter of anything. The ruling should be greeted with laughter and a shrug. "Whatever".

And, seriously, the UN itself should simply disband.

The UN has officially exceeded itsnshelf life. Time to exict it from the USA and disavow any support of it.

Without US bucks, it will wither away.

How many divisions does the UN Commission have to enforce their “ruling”. I do believe that eventually Britain (formally Great Britain) will give up the islands because the cost to defend them will be too great.

The chairman of the Commission of the Limits of the Continental shelf is from Nigeria, there is actually a Brit on the board, no telling how he voted.

This would be the perfect time for retaking the islands. Emperor Obama hates Britain and would never help them and they could not reclaim them from Argentina acting alone.
