The Art of National Suicide
National Review ^ | 3/28/2016 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 03/29/2016 4:47:41 AM PDT by Servant of the Cross

America can still avoid sharing Europe’s fate. But only if we take action.

Because of what Europe has become, it now has few viable choices in dealing with radical Islamic terrorism. Its dilemma is a warning to Americans that we should turn away from a similar path of national suicide.

After suffering serial terrorist attacks from foreign nationals and immigrants, a normal nation-state would be expected to make extraordinary efforts to close its borders and redefine its foreign policy in order to protect its national interests. But a France or a Belgium is not quite a sovereign nation any more, and thus does not have complete control over its national destiny or foreign relations.

As part of the European Union, France and Belgium have, for all practical purposes, placed their own security in the hands of an obdurate Angela Merkel’s Germany, which is hellbent on allowing without audit millions of disenchanted young Middle Eastern males into its territory, with subsequent rights of passage into any other member of the European Union that they wish. The 21st-century “German problem” is apparently not that of an economic powerhouse and military brute warring on its neighbors, but that of an economic powerhouse that uses its wealth and arrogant sense of social superiority to bully its neighbors into accepting its bankrupt immigration policies and green ideology.

The immigration policies of France and Belgium are unfortunately also de facto those of Greece.

And yet NR hates the only candidate calling for a moratorium on Muslim immigration.

Europe’s perfect storm is upon us. A shrinking, statist, and agnostic society that does not believe in transcendence, either familial or religious, is now in a war with near neighbors of a very different sort.

The editors of National Review have stated that they want people like you to shrivel up and die.

Did you know that National Review was founded by the late William F. Buckley in 1955?

My heart broke last night. It’s over. I listen to the Hardcore History podcast and some Viet Nam vet posted on the podcast’s Facebook page about combat. The podcast discussed how ancient combat was close quarters and this hero commented how most of the combat he saw was up close and personal because the VC knew to close the distance so air and artillery strikes against them would be limited. I thanked him for his service. Within ten minutes this hero was subjected to the vilest criticism. I tried to be civilized and pointed out to the libs that if they were against the war that there problem was with the American people that elected JFK and LBJ as they were the ones that sent American kids over there. This vet was just a kid at the time and answered his country’s calling, just like the Spartans or the Persians that were on the podcast that they were fascinated by. Confronted by logic, the crowd quickly turned on me.

They certainly are often wrong, and may be arguing against the best available solutions, but this article seems on the money. Ad hominem arguments are weak at best.

Buckley wasn’t perfect, and those following him at NR are less so, but those demanding perfection in their reading ought to stick to the Bible-—in the original languages. Translations always have problems. Engaging with sharp minds that are more often than not on the money can be a very good intellectual exercise, though some find it intimidating. There is always the temptation to not fully engage with the actual argument at its deepest levels. Whatever Buckley’s (and NRs) flaws, our intellectual culture would be poorer without them, though it would be better if those flaws were adequately addressed.

Mater si, Magistra no.

National Review sucks!

National Review is not my favorite publication, but Hanson is a serious scholar who deserves to be given a close reading. Not everything at NR is dreck.

Good points about NR. My opinion is in spite of its flaws, there are good authors at NR - Hanson and Andrew McCarthy are my favorites.

Can you imagine a VDH article getting trashed because of the source?!

You're either in the Trump cult or you suck. That's the new simpleton mentality.
