They simply mirrored the chip to software and tried codes on the software copy. It it locks up, you just start with another copy.

This involves very expensive equipment, so it would be very difficult for hackers to duplicate.

You would think somebody’s head would roll for making the Feds look retarded.

Unfortunately, that’s how they roll, why do your goddamned job when you can threaten and harass?

Yep. And many will fall for it, even here : )

What if NSA cracked the code last year and identified terrorist targets for wet work and monitoring last year within days after the terrorist attack at San Bernardino. Then, let MI5, DGESEF and the CIA wet work experts handle those terrorists.

NSA

MI5

DGSE

CIA

The FBI wanted Apple to create a special update for the phone in question because it was concerned that the owner might have enabled a feature that would have erased the drive, had someone entered a bad password ten times.

My guess is that they cloned the phone’s memory, so they could start over if that had happened, then ran through the 4-6 digit passwords.

Perhaps it was kabuki theater of a different sort.

All the energy was put into showing how hard the iphone was to break into.

That might convince some jihadis to use iphones.

Getting more jihadis to use iphones might have been the primary purpose.

All those numbers and texts are going to be to islam-a-nazis that have left town and/or changed ID.

Darn. You stole my comment. Some agent finally took the phone home to his kid and persuaded him to interrupt playing Tour of Duty for a half hour.

I agree.Apple lines up an Apple expert that knows how to hack the phone and the FBI hires him as a “consultant” without admitting the complicity with Apple. FBI gets what they want while Apple commercially gets to project that the Iphone is still secure.

Are you kidding? This result makes Apple look LESS secure. Some unnamed company breaks their vaunted encryption in a week?

I'd be ashamed I put up so much caterwauling about it. Now they just look silly and ineffectual.

Monkeys with toys.

At some point the technology becomes to cumbersome for simple human minds.

The government satellite watcher with bunny slippers and collared greens can’t process much.

Too much unconnected data.

"FBI breaks into San Bernardino gunman's iPhone without Apple's help..."

They found that little slidey-thing on the side and it opened right up. Dang they're good....

Wrong!
Israel gave the FBI the access.

The thing to look for in the near term is whether they are able to access the other 12 iPhones they had waiting in the wings, AND what NYC does with the 175 iPhones they needed help with.
