It is never “turned back.” It is replaced. Sometimes what replaces it is not very nice.

a president that just says things straight out like “the same bathroom for girls and boys is stupid” or “two men getting married is absurd” would help, i guess.

Good point... it gets to the point of being popularly unacceptable, and then the people will accept anybody who promises to be rid of it.
The haters then learn what hate really is. Unfortunately, so does everybody else.
